Hi all,
In response to this thread: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/85263-anyone-evo-try-tethering-vita-pdanet.html, I've gone ahead and run a series of wired USB tethering tests.
First, here is the list of test results. For 3G, I ran them all sitting in the comfort of my own couch. However, I could not get WiMAX at all at home (which is a known issue). So I wound up going for a quick drive to my train station, where I know there is full WiMAX coverage, and ran the remaining 4G tests from my car.
----------------
1. HTC Wired USB Tethering over 3G (4G Radio off)
Setup was quick & painless. Plug in, select Internet Sharing, and wait for Windows 7 to recognize and get an IP address (about 10-15 seconds).
Speedtest.net Results
To Chicago Servers (physically local to me)
To Wichita, KS (where Speedtest.net thinks I am)
2. EasyTether Lite over 3G (4G Radio off)
Installation was straightforward, if you followed the instructions that EasyTether presents to you. You do have to install software onto your laptop for this app.

3. PdaNet over 3G (4G Radio off)
During installation, PdaNet noted that HTC Sync was already installed on my machine, therefore "PdaNet will run in HTC compatible mode." No idea what the hell that's all about.

5. EasyTether Lite over WiMAX

6. PdaNet over WiMAX

Notes:
One thing I noticed was that with both EasyTether & PdaNet, some of the tests would take much longer to complete. This was an issue particularly with the upload test, where it would take upwards to 30 seconds to complete the last few ticks. This never happened with HTC's native app.
I also noticed on WiMAX, that both EasyTether and PdaNet had to resend chunks of data, probably due to corruption or packet loss somewhere. In all WiMAX results, I had either "Good" or "Excellent" signal strength, per the Evo's network information. Also notice that WiMAX issued me a local Chicago-based IP address. That's why I did not bother with running any Wichta tests.
Take it as you will, but personally I'm thinking that HTC's built in tethering app is just fine... EasyTether & PdaNet are not needed.
