What happens when android 2 is released for hero?

When HTC officially releases android 2 (anyone know when that might actually be?), will it still leave me with the same amount of free space, give-or-take? I wonder whether the operating system itself will take up more room and leave me more laggy. (I am reminded of flashing custom roms with windows 6.5.1 on my Touch Diamond - and getting out of memory errors).
Just curious. Thanks!
Pete

It looks like HTC is working on an Android 2.1 build with SenseUI. A few pre-release versions have leaked, which confirm that it is indeed a 2.1 version and does have SenseUI, but it's not for certain that it will come out for the Hero (I'd be willing to bet it will though). Assuming it does make it to the Hero, from what I can tell, it will require a full wipe (like going from 1.76 to 2.73).

As for a release date, there is some word of Dec 11th, but thats far from anything official. The Dec 11th date sounds reasonable to me, but there can be any large number of things to delay their planned release, so who knows. Worse case senario, I'd say middle of January.

Best thing to do really is wait a few days after its released to see what people say about it. Difficult to say anything right now since its only been tested by a few people on the G1 i think.

I definitely agree with that. Wait to get a few reviews on the whole thing. You never know if the update might break something you rely on. There is, however, a leaked version out that the XNA devs have. I'm considering testing it out, but it definitely has quite a few bugs.

i actually spoke to HTC the other day, and they confirmed that it will be coming out for the Hero. I mean to be honest HTC would be stupid not to considering the success they are having with the Hero so far.

I just hope the new rom improves things as opposed to making things worse. Battery life is my main concern, and although its much better now after turning off most of the things on the phone it would be great if they improved this on the new rom.

I'm hoping that if anything the 2.0 (2.1?) firmware will be faster. We all know how laggy the initial release firmware was, and how much faster the updated firmware was in comparison. Hopefully alongside the integration of SenseUI with android 2.0 theyve done some more optimisation.

This is pretty common practice. The initial shipping versions of firmwares have one priority: get it working by the ship date. Subsequent versions have the luxury of being able to fix some of the ugly hacks and bodges and getting it working better.

Does anyone know if android 2 is actually out yet, if so, is it available for the Hero? And also, how do i get my hands on it if it is? Plus I am on orange, so do i have to wait longer??? :p

matey...not to be funny.......but there is such a thing as browsing through the forum you have just joined?

EDIT: On saying that, having realised I've been a snotty git,

nope, the official htc 2.1 rom is not out yet. allegedly rumoured for some time in june, seeing as the sprint version was released a week or so ago.

However, if you root your hero, there are several credible 2.1 roms available that have been put together by knowledgable people.

Hopefully that kinda makes up for being snotty.

EDIT: when I say snotty....I really mean snotty. I'm suffering from the dreaded man-flu, so please take pity.

When 2.1 is released....

Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson will be hosting the press conference.

Follwed by a 4 course meal cooked by Colonel Sanders...

Why would you wait till December the phone will be nearly 2 years old and ready for trading in.

I'm currently running Cronos 1.4.1 Sense 2.1 ROM.

Fully stable, super fast, awesome battery not a bad word to say about it.

I cannot understand why you wouldn't want to Root your phone.

2.1 is old hat now, time for 2.2 then a new phone in 6 months.

Unlock your phones potential......ROOT
