Can the desire be switched off without it doing a soft re-set ?

Hope the title isn't too confusing but i'll elaborate anyway.

Im currently using a Blackberry 8900 and am looking to upgrade to a desire on the 25th June.

On the Blackberry, switching off via the power menu button as I do at night shuts down the phone (so no-one can call etc) and on re-boot it starts back up more or less immediately and doesn't go through a full soft re-set as it would with a battery pull.

How does the shut down process work on the Desire ? if I switch it off does it shut down completely (which ive read can take a long time) like a battery pull or does it shut down in a similar way to my Blackberry as explained above.

I switch my mobiles off at night as I don't want calls ,emails etc to come through (yes I know I could probably switch all data off and still leave the phone on but prefer to simply switch off), but I don't want to do this if it will take minutes to shut down and more importantly minutes to boot back up again because im effectively doing a soft re-set every night !

Any explanations would be appreciated.

Cheers.

A full shut down does take about a minute on my phone, which is what happens when I turn it off.

What I do at night is this instead:

I have a widget on my homescreen for airplane mode (switched off all radio/wi-fi/3g signals etc). This prevents the phone from getting calls, texts and emails.

I then leave the phone and the screen will go to sleep in one min (or a single press of the power button achieves this). I lose no battery overnight this way.

My method also has the advantage that I can use the alarm clock function to wake me up in the morning without the phone losing battery power or getting annoying calls at 4am in the morning from drunken mates.

To wake the phone back up press the power button, then the widget button to turn airplane mode off.

I kinda thought this may be the way i'd have to go.

I think power off on my BB is similar to sleep mode but automatically turns off all radio, data etc as well. It also means I can use the alarm clock function.

The method you describe for the desire isn't too much more hassle in that its one extra press to toggle to airplane mode before hitting the power button.

Certainly not a big enough issue to turn me away :D

If you long press on the power button it actually gives you the option to shutdown, or put it in airplane mode. My method is quicker for me, but for someone else the usual way could be.

As Si Pie said, if you hold down the button for just over a second, the phone will vibrate and when you let go you'll get several options such as full power down, just setting to silent or vibrate (if you still want apps/email/etc to sync but don't want to be disturbed by calls) or full airplane mode which will ensure you're not eating into your data allowance while sleeping.

However, I think you have to hit the power button and swipe the screen to turn it on before the above works, so it might be quicker in that case to just have a widget on the homescreen (there's also an App which does the same thing but which I think you can sync to your alarm so it automatically turns this back on for you in the morning, but I can't remember what it's called).

I would guess that aeroplane mode is exactly the same thing as that on your bb. It turns off all network activity and allows you to use alarm.

Its the same number of presses, just press the aeroplane widget and then let it turns its own screen off :p

The premium version of Juice Defender can switch your phone automatically to a night time while sleeping mode. And it does a great job of keeping your phone active but not all the time, so saving loads of battery time. I'm only using the freebie version, but am seriously thinking of buying the full version (and that would be my first paid for app!).
