Help New to Android

Just got my Incredible days ago. I'm new to Android - and smartphones in general - and have a few questions.

General:

1)Are these phones (Incredible) secure enough to trust buying apps on Marketplace using a credit card? I did,but I'd still like to know going forward.

2)How do I get my msn.com email on my phone? Is it secure?

Beautiful Widgets:

3)Does Beautiful Widgets change any of your settings if you don't?

4)On Beautiful Widgets, does setting the 'weather refresh' (or whatever it's called) to 30 minutes do anything such as drain the battery quicker or anything 'damaging'? I noticed it was set at 2 hours default, but that seems like a long time to go without updating weather - this is Colorado!

I know I have more things I was going to ask, but these questions are lingering for now. Thanks to all.

I don't have beautiful widgets so i can't answer that question, but i can help you with 1 and 2.

1) Yes, not only do i buy apps from the market using google checkout(secure payment service) I have bought actual merchandise through amazon.com from my HTC Incredible. If you're concerned about security, use a password to unlock your phone.

2) to setup MSN on your DROID:

From the applications menu, touch Email
Enter your hotmail email address, and password

If you have previously created an account, press Menu, touch Accounts, press Menu, and touch Add Account
Check Send email from this account by default, in order to use this account to send outgoing mail. (If you do not check this option, a previous email account such as gmail may be used to send outgoing mail)
Touch Manual setup
Touch POP3 account
Enter your username (complete email address including the @msn.com)
Enter your password
Enter POP3 server - pop3.live.com
Enter Port - 995
Change Security type to - SSL
Touch Delete email from server if you want to change this option.
Touch Next
Enter SMTP server - smtp.live.com
Enter Port - 587
Change Security type to - TLS
Touch Next
Customize email frequency
Touch Next
Enter a name for the account (optional)
Enter your name. This is the name will display on outgoing messages.
Touch Done
If the above settings do not work try the replacing the fields below:

POP3 server: pop3.email.msn.com

Incoming Port: 110

SMTP server: smtp.email.msn.com

Outgoing Port: 25

As far as security goes, same as 1), if you're concerned, use a password to lock your phone.

I like weather every 30minutes too - otherwise what is the freaking point of having it on the damn screen?

But, yes, of course it uses more data/battery - but I can't imagine it uses very much at all, just for a quick query/response weather update. That BW is a popular add-on, and if it was wasteful in how it did those updates, I'm sure we would have seen threads about that.

Um, WOW. That's a lot of info. I have to admit I don't know what most of it means. As far as being secure goes, I meant more along the lines of it being hacked or intercepted. Again, don't know much about how that information gets stolen. I'm not worried about someone getting into my actual phone. That's a LOT of info, so thanks.

Oh, and what does the "delete from server" option mean?

For the most part, email is email. These devices use the same email protocols and methods that any other pc type device uses. So it is as secure as regular email is in general.

And "delete from server" is an option you will find in pretty much any email client that exists and has nothing to do with Android. You can probably find better info in an email tuturial on the web, but basically that's the option that controls whether the email is deleted off the email server when you download (receive) it, or if you want it to not be deleted so that you can still retrieve it from your other pc that checks that email account .. you know?
... also in email clients there are usually other options about "delete from server". Like the option to delete from server when you delete from the delete folder. But again, these are just normal email settings and nothing specific to Android.

EDIT: and you say you're not worried about your phone being stolen? If you are even slightly concerned about security, then you should be concerned about your phone being stolen - this is much more serious than your email being hacked. If they have your phone, they now have a lot more than just your email. Especially if you have no locks on it. If you are like most people, with your phone they will then have access to your life, pretty much.

Thanks Humpa. That helps a lot. Appreciate it. Good point about the phone lock. What do most people use? Just a password/numbers every time you go to 'wake your phone up'? Or is there a good app people use?

Yeah, that should cover you in most situations. But there are some nice apps that allow for things like being able to contact your phone and have it send you a text message of its gps cooridinates, or to completely wipe the phone.

I'm not sure of the "good" ones. I'd do some searches and see which app the reviewers always compare everything too - and that's a good one.
