Help **warning: Blackberry charger killed my incredible**

I got my Incredible on Tues, used my BB charger on my phone because the Verizon store said it was ok since it was still a micro usb. My battery started dying after about a few hours. Tried every trick in the book and still died afte about 3 hrs.
Went to the Verizon store and got it replace. They once again said it was ok to use the blackberry charger. So i let the new battery run down as the guy said and began to charge w/ my blackberry car charger for about 30 min. I noticed the orange charger light was not on. I unplugged the charger and the phone will not even turn on now. Verizon is overnighting me another Incredible.

Listen to others if you want or take your chances, but the tech guy at Verizons main tech support center said to use only Htc chargers.

Micro USB (and USB for that matter) are regulated to provide 5V, 500mA to any USB device. Your computer provides this.

I just went and looked at my blackberry charger, it provides 5V at up to 700 mA, my car adapter (from Motorola) provides 5V at up to 1000 mA, while my other home charger (some random chineese company) provides 5V at up to 800 mA, and they all charge my incredible just fine.

Sounds like you just had a faulty Incredible.

Nope. The guy at Verizon said the Verizon store was wrong. They said to use only HTC chargers. The charger out put is different from the BB charger to the HTC charger. The slightest difference can mess up your phone. All these people using their old chargers are in for a big surprise.

The tech said it could take a while, but it will eventually mess up your phone. Everyone's been warned. Just doing my part to share.

I am agreeing with the charger problem, I put my micro usb charger in (BlackBerry One) and everytime I charged it with that charger my phone screen would be unresponsive to any touch. I then unplugged it and it was good as new and I replicated this several times because I was amazed. After I grabbed my new Seido batt I haven't touched that bb charger and have been using the HTC one - either way I know what I saw and it gave me the heebee jeebees so I am good with good ole HTC charger now lol

Smart move yourfriendwayned. I'm just trying to help some folks here. I got my Incredible on Tuesday and haven't really even had the chance to play w/ it. Have to wait til tomorrow and another 8 hrs while it charges. I'm not happy and will be calling the manager at the Verizon store tomorrow to "educate" them. All these people who ignore this warning will find themselves out of a phone. And, they could be voiding their warranty by using the wrong charger.

deff glad you took the time to voice your opinion and results. My phone is fine but I can't imagine what would have happened if I let it go. I don't want any ignorant people flooding this area saying mine don't lol this guy is just warning us Trust me when I say mine did what it did and it spooked me... I could get it to respond if I held my finder on the screen for 5 seconds but on a quick tap it did not respond. It slowed the phone down which was crazy looking.

Fact is this happen to us... take it how you see it

I don't know about your other chargers, but I'm speaking about my blackberry chargers. Using anything but HTC chargers is dancing with fire and the Verizon tech agreed 100%.

I notice a difference using my dare lg charger and using the cheap one I got from Ebay. Best charge comes from my Htc charger. Otherwise its a bad slow charge that didn't last long

The blackberry USB cable is no different than the HTC. Your computer is still providing the charge.

Now, the wall charger - MAYBE. But I use my PC to charge the phone or the wall charger that came with the phone.

Just because a VZW tech says something doesn't mean it's true. They are far from experts on anything.

I'm sorry but I do not buy it. Standard USB Bus power is 5vdc at 500maH.
The standard Blackberry Charger (mine at least for my tour) converts 120vac to 5vdc 700maH.

My HTC Cable converts 120vac to 5vdc at 1a or 1000mah.

The output is the same (voltage) the ampre output varies wich will slow down charge times or speed up alike. I could understand if we were talking varying voltage say for example 5.1vdc or 4.9vdc but thats just not the case.

Further more why would HTC or Google give you the option to charge via~ USB Bus Power if it could be potentially hazardous to the device? I'm in the IS industry and know first hand USB power will fluctuate a whole hell of alot more than a wall charger dependant on 100 variables from USB Hubs, monitor usb ports, laptop battery charge. desktop UPS voltage passthrough etc etc. . . .

Sounds like what motorola tried to pull a few years back with their "unauthorized charger" bunk.

So you're telling me your blackberry charger provides something other than 5V? I've never seen a micro usb blackberry charger that was anything other than 5V.

It had to have been a faulty Incredible...I have been using my BB charger since 4/29 without one issue...A micro USB charger is a micro USB charger is a micro USB charger, voltage should not be an issue...I understand you are giving a warning, but to me, this warning is like saying, a thuderstorm screwed up my Incredible...no....your Incredible was just faulty...the charger was not the cause...

And as far as voiding the warrenty...how in the world would they ever in a million years be able to tell what charger you were using unless you were dumb enough to tell them you were using a BB charger, and even then, the likelyhood they say that using a BB charger voids your warrently would be slim to none...I call BS on this entire thread....lol

Blackberry: 5V - 700mA
HTC:5v - 1A

Not sure what the difference means on the mA/A, but it was my car charger that killed it. And the end connector looks different as well.

what about my Motorola car charger that I used with my LG Versa and am planning on using with my Incredible. Also ordered some ridiculously cheap car charger from Amazon--will that be safe???? We'll see, I guess.

The mAH output will vary for sure. not sure i've seen a verizon charger that has yet to put out the same mAH has a stock charger, usually it is lower so it is compatable with more phone models.

As long as the output voltage is the same (5vdc). your good, Im thinking you had a faulty incredible as well my friend.

Who knows maybe that verizon charger was faulty and it was putting out 5.93vdc at 700mah. that sounds more likely to me. I had it happen on a sirius sattelite radio reciever vehicle adapter. internally shorted, was outputting about 3 volts more that the reciever could handle and fried it.

Verizon is going to tell you to only use the HTC chargers sold by Verizon obviously. They're covering their hides if you end up with some weird charger that doesn't output 5V at a reasonable amperage (And they make a nice profit off it too). Electricity is not exactly magic.

If anything, I'd bet that you have a bad charger or phone.

I do hope the Incredible was faulty. All i know was that it was doing fine until it met my car charger.

I thought the micro usb was meant to solve a lot of problems with universal chargers as well. However, I'm keeping it all with the same brand. Not sure if HTC makes a car charger. The ones i have seen look generic.

I've been using my Verizon BlackBerry car charger for my last 3 devices including my Incredible. Never been a problem. And it certainly cant void your warranty when the compatible device list for the charger lists 25 different Verizon models

I'm with ya on them trying to sell more accessories. However, the Verizon store told me it was ok, so I thought that was cool until my phone got fried.

So the mA listings on chargers is the maximum available output.

A device can pull UP TO that amount, but may use less.

USB mandates 5V at 500 mA, but the charger might be 700 or 1000 mA or even 5,000,000 mA and they'll all work the same.

Again, sorry for the loss of your incredible.

I had those symptoms as well. I would be careful. Just don't want to see anyone go through the same thing.
I think my wall charges damaged the phone first and the car charger finished it off.

I have a generic car charger and have been using it since release day of incredible when i got mine and have had no problems with mine. I think that is a lie saying that you can only use certain chargers maybe to get you to buy another. Why didnt you use the one that came with the phone in the first place??
