Help Spontaneous shutdown / reboots

ok, the spontaneous reboot and shutdowns is getting old quick.

If they truly want to measure up to the IPhone, they best be patching this quickly.

Or, Android will be like the I'm a PC / I'm a MAC commercials with Android being the less stable, flaky OS.

Hopefully the patching process will be soon, and easy.

You have a bum phone. I got a Droid today at 8 AM CST, and it was doing that too (rebooting on it's own a lot). Then I noticed that the back was getting VERY warm, and the device smelled like "the magic smoke came outta the chips". I took it back to VZW and they replaced it. My "new" one works like a champ.

In my case, I suspect that it was a bad video chip, as it would flake when I was doing something video intensive.

If your Droid has a mind of it's own, you have a dud. I was at my local best buy and the mobile employee was finishing me up, activating my phone. It started shutting down on it's own before he could walk through all the activation steps. He finally gave up on the phone saying he would not let me walk out with it working like that, went on to another phone that performed the activation extremely fast, then we saw the dud droid powering itself back up!

If your droid has a mind of it's own, go get a replacement. Our droids should not be self-aware.

If it's doing the spontaneous reboot at all I think I would take it back and get a new one before I spent any more time with a defective phone. *Knock on wood* I have had mine for almost 24 hours and during my waking time I did just about everything. Email, instant messenger, facebook, still pictures, video, navigation, transfer music and pictures from my computer, talk, text...(Did I miss anything?) Oh, and added a few apps. Not one time did the phone reboot. I can't really tell if it's warm because I bought that gel cover for it (which I LOVE! It feels rubbery so it is unlikely to slip out of your hand but it is soft enough to press the camera and volume buttons through the case) but I pressed my hand on the back and can't feel any heat. No need for anyone to have such a frustrating experience with such an awesome device.

Guys, definitely take those phones back if they are randomly rebooting. The difference between the defective phone and a none defective phone in terms of speed was quite noticable. Ah, the pitfalls of being one of the firsts!

My phone gets warm, but works fine. Warm phone should not be the only indicator. Just fyi.

I concur with sly...phones should not reboot just because they feel like it. It just shows a manufacturers defect.

Word to the wise, you can go into "Settings", "Privacy", and in there you can factory reset your phone. This will erase all of your user data on the phone; however, it won't blank your SD card.

When I got my second phone, I stayed in the store and hammered on it for a while to make sure it works. The VZW people didn't mind, as I was sitting by the windows, doing all of the cool features. I guess I became an advertizing tech mannequin for the Droid.

i haven't had any shut downs or freezes but you might try this suggestion...download the free app "taskller" and run it every so often. i have run it a couple of times since yesterday morning when i got my droid. it kills all or user defined apps that are still open and or running. after playing with the droid for a while you would be surprised at how many apps are open. launch the taskiller and it will list them all.

Mine was rebooting constantly, it did it 3 or 4 times in a row.

I took it back this morning, they suggested I was running too many apps at once. I told them, I've had the phone less than 24 hours, if I'm running too much already, then we've got a problem!

They strongly suggested downloading taskkiller, to more easily kill things, to not to have too much running at once, which still sounds like a cheezy excuse.

While killing apps, it rebooted on the sales guy, so at least they got to see it first hand.

They replaced it, and so far, so good, but I haven't really done anything with the replacement one yet.

Lets hope its much better than the last one!!

Mine was also rebooting itself constantly, took it back to best buy swapped it out and no problems as of yet. I say yet cause ive had it only an hour so far so good. I asked if anyone else had returned anything they said no i was the first. I guess bound to have some defective phones in the thousands they have manufactured...

So Far, so good....

My store says they sold about 70 yesterday.

There were 12 in front of me in line, and a couple behind me, so about 15 at the door when they opened at 8:00am.

Anywho, they replace it, and so problems yet...

They suggest using taskkiller to periodically kill off apps.

Still seems strange to me, that if you go in and out of weather, that weather doesn't stop, or in and out of email, that email doesn't stop, etc....

My phone had crashed 10 times in 30 hours after purchase. I just replaced it at the Verizon store, and so far so good.

Consequently,the way Android works, apps aren't generally "stopped" until there is a need for the resources they are using (chiefly, memory). If you hold the Home button, you'll see a list of apps that are technically still loaded, but they should not be getting any CPU time.

Any claim that the device crashes because of the workload is a bad claim. The device performance should degrade and/or you should be notified if you are over-working it. These crashes are simply a bug, hardware or software.
