Let's be clear here. We don't REALLY know how AT&T treats Android because they WON'T FLIPPING RELEASE ANY REAL PHONES.

I can't BELIEVE I've waited since February for those mythical 5 Android phones, and here 5 months later we still only have the Backflip.

I'm thinking that once the iphone 4 is released and has a couple of weeks of the spotlight alone (since it is ATT starlet after all), the new Androids will be released on ATT. At least that's what I'm hoping. I badly want the Galaxy S for use on ATT 850/1900.

but you know the international version has the 1900 UMTS band which at&t uses for 3g, so its still possible to get that. I am torn as to whether I should wait until whenevre next month when they get galaxy s or just get the international version.

I've considered that too, but I fear what I may find I can't do if it doesn't have 850. I thought I read in one of the forums that 850 was what AT&T was expanding, but I could be wrong now, or mis-understood that.

Hey randy_c I am kind of torn though between getting the international version or waiting for at&t's version just because if I get at&t's version off contact it will probably cost about $490 tops, while the international version on clove.co.uk is $587 (includes shipping) with only the 1900 GSM bands. From looking at this website though it looks like 1900 should cover all of the west and east coast: GSM Coverage Maps | United States. I am just a little scared i guess with not having the 850 bands. I would be curious to see just how must at&t is going to change the galaxy s.

I did checked and as long as 1900 in your area then you will get the 3G. I tested Denver area and most Denver had both 850 & 1900 so I plan to get the international version. I am currently using iphone and I used it to test 3G band.

AT&T model will be the I897 and if you search you will see the phone completely different from the I9000. I9000 will have option for wifi tether. you know AT&T will disable that.

Did you get yours for $587.00 I want one at that price.. PLEASE How do you order? Will they ship to US?

Cool. The only place I have seen selling it for that cheap to the usa is clove.co. uk. We are in the usa so we don't paythe vat. Total price with shipping is 401 ponds which comes out to $587.

Wow man... thanks for that tool. Best interactive map for coverage I've seen yet. You've got to be careful, though, for AT&T, you want that last link (AT&T Mobility 3G 850/1900), & you only want to focus on the yellow areas there (at least, that's if I'm reading it correctly.

I returned my MyTouch Slide today and am waiting for the Galaxy S. I wish they'd be better about announcing releases that are so close together so that we can actually made good choices as consumers.

Those are interesting coverage maps. Thanks! When I go into field test mode on my iphone 3GS in the Houston area, I find that I am always on 850, but according to the maps it looks like the whole metro area is 100% covered with 1900 as well. I may import one in that case.

The best price I've seen is 382 GBP shipped to the US on handtec, which is about $550. That's not bad at all and I might pull the trigger. I wonder if we would have a return policy from the US.

Actually when you compare the 850 and 1900 individual maps it shows that they have almost equal coverage in the same areas. The only issue that just came to mind was whether the 850 band was better at penetrating buildings than 1900? Because if so then the 1900 coverage would inherently be worse.

To everyone in this thread,

I have been interested in ordering this phone online for a while because I don't trust AT&T handling of Android phones (and I want one now ).
I was unsure about the situation with the 3g bands, so I did some research and called At&T tech support.
After finding out that the 1900 3G bands will work by way of research, I called AT&T tech support hoping for official word on this. I was finally able to get someone to enlighten me a bit about this (one customer service gal didn't even know what 3G 'band' is).
1900 will work but the advantage of 850 is that it will work in some areas where 1900 won't work, so you won't get spotty coverage. This may not be an issue when it comes to major cities, and by looking at the coverage maps GSM Coverage Maps, it doesn't seem like it would be a problem. However, I read on some other forum that AT&T is interested in furthering 850 and not so much on the 1900 bands anymore.
Another issue is that 850 will work much better indoors due to its low frequency.
The other issue is that even though the phone is unlocked, the settings on the phone will need to be changed in order to work with AT&T. The tech support lady searched her database for Samsung Galaxy S settings but didn't find any. She said that using the settings from Samsung's other phones will most likely work.
In other words, there is no official guarantee on anything, it most likely will work, but buy at your own risk.

thanks for the info from the at&t rep. I don't think there will be any issues with needing special 3g settings when we put in our at&t sim card because the phone is not locked to any network, therefore it will not be preconfigured for O2's network settings or Vodophones settings.

Anyways, I just bit the bullet and preordered my Samsung Galaxy S at Handtec since it was about $30 cheaper than clove. I have a nexus one which I bought for $560 total, so buying the Galaxy S for $550 is pretty amazing to me.

From reading recent news, there will be no good android phones besides the galaxy s (and we aren't even sure what they will do to it yet) coming to at&t in the next 6 months. All we have heard of is the Dell Aero (sucks), Dell Streak (pretty awesome but no 720p recording, no super-amoled), and the HTC Aria (entry level, bite sized slider with inferior resolution). These are all of the phones that have been hinted to come to at&t and besides the dell streak I am not excited. I think that the samsung galaxy s is the best thing coming. However with Tmobile likely getting it first, who knows when At&t will finally release it. I am not trying to wait until Nov/Dec to get a better Android phone. Just unacceptable. So yeah, hopefully the international Galaxy S does the job.If not I can sell it on craigslist, and it will still be sought after because at&t probably won't release their own for awhile. Just expressing my internal anguish, lol.

I'm going to take a chance as well and preorder it on Handtec. They don't have stock untill June 14th anyway, so if I change my mind or find new information, I can cancel.
I haven't been excited about any other phone that much!

True, but when they had their chance with releasing the Backflip. They just had to screw it up which is not a good first impression. I will now think twice before even switching to At&t and I'm sure there are others that feel the same way.

I currently have a nexus one and with the release of a mod on xda that unlocks the ability to record in 720p I may just be able to wait until the us version comes out. I will probably cancel my preorder for now. My nexus one surprises me more and more every day

N1 is very interesting i recently manually updated my coworker's nexus one to froyo and i love it!! i can't wait until galaxy s comes out and update it to froyo

The news that AT&T is aiming to complete their 3G network migration to the more capable 850Mhz GSM ban came straight from de la Vega, so it’s a fairly reliable goal-line to look towards. Unfortunately for folks with 2G-limited (EDGE) devices, AT&T’s decision to co-opt the higher-frequency band for 3G services will means that 2G services will now rely on the more finicky and shorter-range 1900Mhz band. In fact, you may have already started noticing a drop in 2G performance in your area. Still, the push to migrate 3G services to the 850Mhz band highlights AT&T’s ongoing effort to improve their 3G network.

So basically by getting a phone that works on the less reliable portion of at&ts network we are definitely asking for trouble. So as much as I hate hate hate waiting. I think that I will have to wait for an official us version.
