For fear of sounding like a dope I'm going to ask. I was able to do the root because I was able to follow the step by step. I can't seem to find any step by steps on flashing a new Rom. I don't understand what making a nandroid means. I feel like a total Goober asking but if I eont figure anymore I really wasted my time going thru the root process.

Thanx.

Here is a "how-to" link to download Fresh 2.1. Im sure it is basically the same for all roms, someone can correct me if im wrong.

Download this to computer and then copy over to your sd card. Turn phone off, press and hold the home key on your phone and restart phone. You will see a boot screen where you will do a nandroid backup, wipe, etc. Then you will execute the zip file. Be sure when you are done playing, to download the patch that is on the same link, so that you can properly tether your phone wirelessly, if that matters to you.

Good luck, hope this helps!

Not sure which "Step by step" you read, but read the guide/tutorial up at the top. Near the bottom it talks about flashing a ROM. It should help you out a bit :)

I was in the same boat as you as I rooted last Friday night. The instructions out there are good if you know what you're doing. But, I've found them to miss a few steps and assume that you know a few things--which I never seem to know. LOL. Below are the instructions on how I rooted my phone---it took me a while to figure out and build the confidence to actually do it, but if you trust the instructions it would take about 30 minutes (if that).

Lastly, on the bottom, are the instructions on how to put ROMs onto the hero. You actually don't need to rename it to update.zip but just need to put it on the root of the flash card (drive) by pushing using the linux command or via mounting via USB (which is what I did) and copying to the removable drive.

ROOTING HERO INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions to Root are found here (go here and follow his steps and download the stuff he says to): [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers

Finish with his instructions and you will boot up into a new/clean version of Android 2.1. But now, you'll need to flash the ROM so it works like we expect. See below.

FLASH ROM to HERO Instructions
You'll need to move it to the root of the SDCard
-Mount the USB Hero device and copying to it to the root of the SD card (removable disk drive) via the Explorer in Windows (or you can use the adb push method, I just like to mount the device and copy it over using Windows Explorer)

To flash the ROM to the Hero, do this (it's basically a modified version of the rooting instructions):
Make sure USB Debugging is off: Settings>Applications>Development

Next Steps after the ROM is on the root of the SD Card:
Power down the Hero
Power it up by pressing the home key (looks like a house) + the power key (keep them held down together at the same time and hold them in until utility program starts up)
Do a backup (they call this a nand backup or something)
Wipe the device (using the command, you may have to use the back key to navigate to/fro)
Go back to the menu and select flash/update
Let it run its course; should take 5 minutes or so..be patient and let it go.

List of ROM's:
XDADeveloperWiki - CDMA Hero ROMs

I tried this one first: Aloysius 2.1 (06/01/10) by Konikub (it had great reviews and it pretty slick actually)

I've only put one ROM on mine so far, but it looks like its pretty simple. The more confusing part is knowing about the capabilities of NAND Backups and restore points. I am clueless there.

The root of the SD card is the same as the highest directory or in the case of Windows it is C:\ on the card it is just \.

An Nandroid backup is a copy of your phone as it sits with the operating system on it. So if you backed it up using android backup, installed a new rom and then went to restore after that, it would erase the new ROM and put your phone back to where it was at the time of the Nandroid backup. Handy if you screwed up or don't like the ROM.
What you also want is an application and data backup program. Titanium and My Backup Pro are two that come to mind. After the new ROM you load the backup program and then do a restore of the apps. Keeps you from downloading and installing them all again.
Good Luck!
