Help Credential storage password

I'm going mad with my S4 running 4.4.2. I setup a VPN (two of them) without problems. Now when I try and enter the VPN screen I get asked for my credential storage password (which of course I don't have and have never set). None of the above work arounds work. I've tried a screen lock pin, password, pattern, none. I've cleared the credential storage from the security options - which is now greyed out. I've tried getting the password wrong until it clears it, yet then it just keeps asking for a password which I still don't know and can't get right. It's not asking me to set a new one either. My carrier (3 Ireland) have recently upgraded me to 4.4.2 - I never had this problem on 4.2. So I appear to have an S4 that is incapable of accessing the VPN feature! Any clues/advice before I throw it out the window?

apkeene and all others that had this issue....so did I. Very, very frustrating. But I solved it (well, mine)...if you think about it it's obvious. My phone had slide to unlock. No VPN provider of any worth will allow the configuring of a private tunnel with such poor security and, as such, I believe the Android OS has taken this on board (in KitKat and higher). Set a PIN or pattern to unlock your phone and, hey presto, you'll be able to access and configure your VPN function. I hope this works for all of you...good luck! Tim.

Signed up to reply as this was the top Google hit for "enter the password for credential storage". Thanks for the tips. On my Motorola Moto E (unlocked on Vodafone UK), I was able to get around this problem. (I was trying to install a certificate for my work's WiFi.)
  1. Turn off screen lock.
  2. Install certificate. I was then told I needed to set up screen lock.
  3. Set up screen lock as before.
  4. Certificate installed!
Bizarrely, I didn't have this problem last time I tried to use this certificate on an identical phone. (I bought the phone a couple of weeks ago, but had to have it replaced because the internal speaker wasn't working properly.)

In settings->security there is a credential storage section with an option to set the password. I don't remember ever setting a password for this. Is there a default PW? I'm trying to connect to the Wifi at work but it asks me for this password. Anyone know whats up with this?

So the Problem with those certificates is that they require security password on your screen before you can install them that's why all this is happening.
Solution is create a password for locking the screen ( password not the pattern lock) and then when you try again it won't ask for the credential storage password. The certificates will get install easily.

For those of you guys who feel desesperate to never can save a certificate into the keystore here is how to do on a Samsung;
- connect your phone to Samsung Find my Mobile
- then you can login on your account and unlock your phone, this reset the protection to slide and reset the encryption of the masterkey with the new derivation scheme (/data/misc/keystore/user_0/.masterkey)
Cheers!

I know this is an old question. But I just face this problem because I change my PC so I must re-install network app cert that I use.
I hope this help someone with the same problem with mine.
My phone never prompt me this before. I always has the password to unlock (text password) so I suspect it's one of their update patch.
I update to the last version and it's still the same (now it's not treat to remove all credential but it ignore you completely with repeat incorrect password text), I already try pass mobile unlock password.

What you have to do is remove your lock password/pin before. And when you try to install cert again it'll say you need to set phone password/pin, set it after that and it'll be fine.
It seem like their code is bug somehow so it only detect that the password is set after some that patch update or not. Really they should know this bug exist already, what a bad programming
