Can I get an Inc4G and keep my grandfather plan...General

I'm a small phone guy which is why I still use my original Inc. I'm thinking of upgrading to the Inc4G before it goes bye bye since it's a small phone and they are hard to find anymore. I have my doubts that this phone will be available for much longer because I think it was a major flop for Verizon. Mostly their fault for keeping the boot loader locked. If this thing could have been rooted right out of the box, I think it would have been more of a success and there would have been ROMs available for it. Since it took so long to root, I think developers skipped this phone so i'm not expecting to see any major custom ROM support. Having said that, I still want the phone because it's smaller. The ability to root is good enough for me as long as I can streamline the stock ROM by getting rid of most of the junk that's preloaded and edit most of the stock apps to get a more custom look to my liking (mostly just changing the statusbar icons and such). I prefer having all white status bar icons.

My problem is I don't want to be forced into dropping my unlimited data plan to get the phone for $50, but I don't want to pay full price either just to keep my current plan. I'm not concerned with 4G so keeping it active on my 3G plan is good enough.

Is there a way to do this? Has anyone been able to get the Inc4G without losing their unlimited data plan?

you cannot buy a subsidized phone from verizon and keep you unlimited.

if you want to keep your unlimited you have two options...
    - buy phone from verizon (or other retailer) at full price (i think it was $500 last i looked).
    - but a used phone. ebay, craiglists, or a forum such as this one (maybe a little safer than ebay).

I'm a small phone guy too, went from Dinc, to Dinc2, back to Dinc and now to Dinc 4g. I just purchased it mint condition from craigslist for $100. I had it activated at no additional cost and am still on my unlimited/grandfathered plan.

I think Verizon is selling it at $70, the extra $30 is well worth keeping my out of contract and grandfathered status.

The locked bootloader had nothing to do with the popularity of the phone. 95% of the people don't root at all so why would they care if the bootloader is locked or not. People get carried away with that. The majority of the people care less. What made the inc 4g a so called failure was it released at nearly the same time as the s3. End of story. Everyone was waiting for the s3 so why buy the inc 4g. Nothing more nothing less.

Somewhat true but not so "nothing more nothing less" I'm not a Samsung fan and I'm sure many others are not either, the sg3 is a great phone but not that fcking great either. The size, the fact it was released in the midst of other higher end phones, the fact it didn't rival the One X and the locked boot loader all played a part. An underdeveloped phone will not sell as well as a phone with a large development community that's a fact. I don't agree with 95% I do so agree the rooted users make up only a fraction but it makes a mark.

90% of phones users don't know what a bootloader is. The rooting community is a small percentage of people. The s3 was and still is the best selling phone of all time. The name alone is why most people bought it. It really is nothing more nothing less than that. Sales of a phone determine whether developers develop for it. If everyone bought an s3 and few have an inc 4g why develop for it.the pathetic sales of the galaxy nexus is proof. Huge developing community yet noone cared. Noone was gonna pay 149 for the inc 4g when in less than a month you could of got the s3 for between 199 and 299. Everyone waited and got the s3. Forums like these and xda tend to warp ehat the realty of the average phone consumer is. Here's a easy way to explain it. These numbers are not exact but they kinda show what I mean. Say xda had 1 million users. Its less than that but let's just say with guests and people just lurking its 1 million active users for all of there forums. Verizon alone has almost 100 million customers. Att has 90 plus million. Add t mobiles 20 or 30 so million and sprints 30 some odd million. Your talking about maybe what less than a percent of people on xda.

I kind of wish I didn't change my grandfathered plan. Stupid of me to have done that! Oh well.

I wish I had the bucks so I could donate the phone to Hawksnest. Ecliptic on this phone would be cool...
