Can I get the generic email app to NOT check my email when my tablet is sleeping?

    Hey all,

This is my first post. If it is a duplicate I apologize, but I did search and couldn't quite find a request like mine.

I have an Acer Iconia A500 with the latest version of Honeycomb (3.2). I use the generic email app to check my Comcast email. However, I also check that same account with three other computers.

Is there a way to not have the email app check the mail when the tablet is sleeping? Or at least is there a way to have the app auto-delete email if I have already deleted them?

As it is now, every time I open the tablet I have a bunch of email on there that I have already deleted from the server.

I know I can change the frequency it checks, but that isn't quite what I am looking for. I like it checking often when I am actively using the tablet.

    Set it to manual sync?

    Thanks for the replies.

chanchan, the thing is, I do want it to auto check for new mail. When the tablet is active. I just don't want it to check when the tablet is sleeping.

fionasara, the options aren't quite the same as you describe. I do have the incoming settings set to delete emails from the server when I delete them from the inbox.

I'm guessing there isn't a way to do what I'm asking. But it seems surprising. Thunderbird on my laptop functions exactly that way. When my laptop is closed, it does not check my email. When I log back in, it checks the server and checks every few minutes until I put my laptop back to sleep.

Maybe I should look beyond the regular email app?

I can't say I've come across anything that does exactly as you require, but there may be something you can do to get round the problems you're having. For example, if you're getting new e-mail notifications whilst the tablet isn't being used and these are disturbing you, then you could turn the notifications off, as it sounds like you're not interested in knowing about e-mails unless you're actually using the tablet.

If that isn't quite what you want because you still want to hear/see notifications when you are using the tablet, then something like Tasker might be able to help you by muting notifications (or many other things) when the screen is off.

As for deleting already read e-mail, K9 e-mail appears to be quite reliable at correctly reflecting what is actually still on the server, so if you've deleted it using another PC, it shouldn't be there when you open your e-mail using K9 (it has a "Sync server deletions" option for each individual account), if you want to give that a go.

Cool. That sounds exactly what I am looking for. (Though all the recent one and two star reviews for K9 are making me a little nervous.)

I hope the generic email app is updated to better sync with servers in the future. What I am looking for seems like such an obvious feature. Surely I am not the only Android user who turns on his tablet at night and sees his email full of old and already deleted messages?

Well, I just tested it in two applications. I deleted some e-mails in Windows Mail and saw them disappear from K9 within a few seconds without closing and re-opening the app, then I deleted a couple of e-mails in K9 and saw them disappear from Windows Mail almost instantly. I wouldn't worry about the reviews on the Market too much, just try it for yourself and make your own mind up. I think it's great though.

Don't be put off, K9 is a really good email app. I'll try others, but I'll always go back to that (both on my phone and my tab).

Incidentally, we've a sub-forum for the Iconia A500, would you like your post moved there? You might get more assistance from people who own the tab.
