The Bootloader Is the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS for getting Root!

The version of the bootloader on your Eris tells you whether or not you can root with currently-known methods (as of 6/22/2010). It does NOT tell you what the history of your Eris has been or what version of the OS is on your Eris.

If your goal is to root your Eris this is the only thing which determines whether or not you can root - nothing else matters (not 1.5/2.1/OTA, radio firmware version - NOTHING ELSE).

PLEASE READ THAT AGAIN: The only thing which determines whether or not your Eris is rootable is the bootloader version number - nothing else.

There are only four or five possibilities for bootloader version:

Code (Text):
1. 1.45.????  This Eris is ROOTABLE
2. 1.46.????  This Eris is ROOTABLE
3. 1.47.0000  This Eris is ROOTABLE
4. 1.49.2000  This IS the ROOT bootloader  (note minor version .2000)
5. 1.49.0000  This Eris is UNROOTABLE as of 6/22/2010 (note minor version .0000)

Note that phones with the "1.49.2000" bootloader (phones that were previously rooted) are also ROOTABLE - you can simply re-run the rooting procedure on these phones too.

You can determine the version number of your bootloader as follows:

1) Power your Eris off.
2) Press and hold both the Send and End/Power buttons simultaneously until the screen lights up.
3) Write down EXACTLY what the SECOND LINE in the display says.
4) Power off the Eris by pulling the battery. (Replace it after waiting 5-10 seconds.)

The published method (in the Sticky Post) for rooting will work for EVERY ERIS WHICH HAS A ROOTABLE BOOTLOADER, and NO ERIS with the 1.49.0000 bootloader - there are no exceptions. One more time, I'll repeat here: neither the version of the OS, nor the version of the radio firmware, nor the recovery boot version control whether or not you can root; the only thing which matters is the bootloader version.

( The instructions in the Sticky post were written at a time when there were "2.1 Leak" phones - that have the 1.49.0000 bootloader. There were no other "2.1" Erises at the time, and thus the mention of 1.5 in the title - but the actual version of the OS is irrelevant to the rooting process. So, don't let that confuse you.)

Sorry for being so repetitive - but there were few prominent posts which made this clear.

I agree.

This info should have been updated in original threads instead of buried in posts in different threads.
