Root Can I update to future Android versions after rooting?

Hi all.

I have an unlocked Milestone (UK version).

If I root it, can I upgrade the OS to future versions when Motorola releases the updates?

I understand OTA won't work, but can I still download the update from the Motorola website and apply it? Or is my only option to flash a new rom with the new version of the os? Would this erase all my data?

I doubt after 2.2 we milestone owners will be getting any more official updates. Custom roms will be the only way to get another update.
