Can I use My Hero for MP3/camera withOUT service?

My wife and I each have HTC Heroes... the Sprint versions.
We are approaching our upgrade availability, and will be doing just that.

So... we have two perfectly good android Hero's, two kids who like to play games and listen to music... and are wondering...

Can we still use the Hero once the Sprint service is disconnected? Can it be used for:
    1) MP3s?
    2) As cameras?
    3) Can we still access the app market via our home network?

Also... if anybody has any how-to's to help us with this, it would be great. Is there anything I need to do with the phone (upgrade OS or anything) BEFORE we switch phones?

Thank you in advance for help and ideas!

Hello and welcome to the forums, sad39.

Run it wifi only for the Android Market and downloading music files, etc. Your browser will work just the same as if on a data plan. ;)

If your camera has settings for emailing pics, etc, just disable all that. The camera itself should work fine.

I still use my Sprint HTC Hero as an Wi-Fi enabled Internet device. Everything I could do before I switched the cellular service to my Sprint HTC EVO 3D still works, except the whole making telephone calls and text messaging thing. ;)

In fact, if you root and flash an Android 2.3 ROM to your old handset, you could use SIP calling. That, coupled with Google Voice for text messaging, would make it a great home telephone. :)

Sad39, both my wife and I use unactivated sprint HTC Heroes. They work fine as Wifi devices and MP3 players.

That's exactly what I did with my HTC Hero (CDMA). Except I rooted it with CM7 lol maybe a bit of overkill since I only use it for SIP calling but hey I just wanted to have some fun with it :D

I still use my Hero even though I cancelled my service as for a home phone, but I also still use my camera and download stuff off the market on occasion and still do some web browsing when im bored. It still is a great phone, just because i cancelled the service doesn't mean the phone has to become a paper weight :D

EDIT: Sorry for the edit but i forgot to mention that along with SIP calling I get unlimited text messaging (In and outbound). I also didn't have to root or flash the phone to enable sip calling, I did it because I wanted to learn how to root a phone and learn how to install cyanogenmod 7

    What is sip calling?

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It is basically allows telephone calls to be transacted over HTTP.

Having the ability to use SIP in Android 2.3 and up just means that you can use your Google Voice telephone number with a VoIP app. I hope this helps.

do you have any write ups on this? everything i have tried that i found on google isn't working

i can get the phone to connect to the server and the server (using callwithus.com) to see the phone, but i cant make or receive calls. it will just say dialing then call ended right away

It is probably not working because you are still on Android 1.5. Android 2.3 is required for SIP calling to work properly with your Google Voice telephone number.

I would recommend CyanogenMod 7.2 if you are looking for a good Android 2.3 ROM for the Sprint HTC Hero. Step on over to the root section if you have additional questions.

Oh, i updated to the current ota (i think it is 2.3). I cant get it to work on my evo 3d either.

Hero never got 2.3 OTA - Stuck in 2.2 googleland....

Promise it works on 2.3. Try and app called GoVoip - if you can't find it...PM me.

Haha. I said that you need a custom ROM like CyanogenMod 7.2 above. No harm done though. MahaloCat has you covered on the correct app to use.

Just throw the CyanogenMod 7.2 ROM, along with the GApps, onto your Sprint HTC Hero. If you need help with that, head on over to the root section.
