Can you flash a ROM other than one that is made for your phone

What I meant with the question: If you flash a ROM for a phone other than your own phone, will it work? Also, does a custom made ROM upgrade your Firmware version? -.-

Highly recommend never doing this. There may be some very special exceptions, but I'm not aware of them. You will most likely brick your phone.

???. There is a reason why the phone that the Rom is made for is always very clearly specified.
But try it and see.

Custom roms from what I know, could either upgrade our downgrade your firmware, its all dependent on the firmware you currently have, and the option you choose to flash.

likewise, a developer may upgrade his ROM, I've flashed Andy x ROM for have several times, going from v12 to v 15 now!

Are you suggesting flashing a ROM for a galaxy s3 on a galaxy s2? This kind of other phone, our are you suggesting copying from your mates gs2 onto your gs2? (not saying that's the phones in question, just using an example)

My answer applied to this. You can't do this. It will brick your phone. ROMS are made for specific phones.

Many times roms are ported by devs. So you may find a rom based on HTC Sense for example, that can run on a Samsung device but that's only because the framework was adjusted to allow it. So it's still actually built for your specific device and it will be clearly posted as such in YOUR phone's forum. It just takes some smoke and mirrors on the back end (done by the devs) to make it happen. Going to another phone forum and randomly downloading a rom, then flashing it on your phone is not a good plan as already said by others.

ROMS are usually made to work on a specific kernel. Kernels can vary from one phone from another even if they are made by the same manufacturer.

I learned my lesson on that with my Droid 1.
