Help Can't access call menu during calls

I am having a few issues with my motorola droid. When I make a call & put the phone up to my ear, the dialpad & other options fade to black. Thats normal, but if I pull the phone away from my ear & hold it in front of me, it does not come back. Sometimes if I slide the phone open, I can access it, but that doesn't always work. The call will still be on going, but I can't hang up. I try tapping the power button up top to wake it up, but nothing still. So I end up having to take the battery off & restarting it.

Is this an issue for anyone else & does anyone know of a workaround?
