I think the general consensus is: HTC Desire is the better all round package and a better phone, but the Galaxy kills the Desire when it comes to gaming.

It kind of depends what you want to use the phone for. I personally much prefer the Desire, but others would think differently. Only thing I would say is that the Galaxy apparently has quite buggy software, but this may have been fixed now, im not sure.

One more thing I would say is that all major publications when reviewing phones have placed the HTC Desire above the Galaxy.

I would always urge people not to get a phone based upon its camera. Mobile phone cameras are notorious for being bad and tend to get even worse over time due to the constant bashing of the lense cover. Both the Galaxy S and Desire have good cameras for phones, but only in good light conditions.

The desires web browsing experience is second to none.

I have had a quick go on the Galaxy S and obviously use the Desire.

First impressions of the Galaxy were, wow its light and WOW that screen is immense, the 0.3" (that is galaxy has 4" screen desire 3.7") size increase on the galaxy s seems to be more like 1"!

After 10 mins of use I think the desire is simpler to use and setup thanks to Sense UI. I think if you can make screen 4 the home screen on the Galaxy S (not sure if you can, ive not had chance to see) it would make it better, having to scroll 7 screens to get to the last one is a big PTA.

Galaxy S uses a different way to add programs to the home screen, its simply click on the program and hold in the all program screen (not sure of propper name) then it adds it, on the desire you click menu and do it that way. There dont seem to be as many widgets on the Galaxy S but then im sure there are Apps that more than make up for that.

Never had chance to test the Galaxy's camera but it cant be worse than the Desires, unless in good light the desires isn't amazing but isnt bad for a phone camera, good enough to catch the odd pic though id say. Video capture likewise, I cant really comment.

I think other than these points there wont be much in it, especially once Froyo comes to the Galaxy S.

One last thing, make sure you get a standard software phone whichever you go for (no network branding) because the branding really screws the phone (Orange are 2 months behind on major software release!!!!!!!) and is generally bad. Either buy the phone and go sim only or go to someone like car phone warehouse, probably not the best service but at least you will have the propper phone with the right software!!

Let us know how it goes. :)

I played with a friends Galaxy for an hour or so.
I found it frustrating. I was trying to set it up for her but there were some things that you could not do like make the default home screen the middle one or switch off 3g (without apn droid). Samsung are clearly going after Iphone users so they have tried to make it more like an Iphone which if you have come from an I phone would make the transition easier but for me it was annoying (along with the Iphone 3gs knockoff looks).
I also confirmed that the GPS was terrible as widely reported. cloudy day under a thin fabric gazebo desire had no problem pinpointing my location Galaxy could not get a location at all. Not sure if there is a fix for this widely reported issue yet but it would be a deal breaker for me if not.

You probably should post in the Galaxy forum as well. I am sure they have as many reasons why the Galaxy is better than the Desire as we do Desire over Galaxy ;o).

One thing is pretty sure though (in Europe) which ever suits you best the other is almost certainly the next best alternative unless of course you can get your hands on the new Desire Z or Desire HD of course...............

you can do that on desire too.

the only benefits to the galaxy S is the GPU for games and the built in memory for apps storage is larger.

The device itself is slower due to the Touchwiz ui they put on
keiz software doesnt support window 7 or any x64 environment unless you force it but then some things dont work

desire all the way, the support for it is phenominal.
you run into a problem with a desire and someone will know how to fix it

My best friend just got the galaxy and as he's rubbish with tech, I had to set it up.

It's pretty identical to the Desire, but there were major downfalls all set around the lack of HTC Sense.

ie. There are 7 homescreens on the Galaxy, but it defaults to the first page. You need to scroll through all 7 to get to whatever you've put on the last page. With the Desire, it defaults to the 4th page with 3 either side and you can pinch to zoom out and see all 7 pages.

Also, the Galaxy was missing some important widgets that the desire has. I couldn't find an email widget (so you can have your inbox displayed on one of your homepages). All I could find was an icon. The same for the Calendar - I have one of my homepages set up with a calendar widget showing the week ahead's appointments, with the very next appointment showing as a mini widget on my main homepage. Again I couldn't find this on the Galaxy.

I also have another homepage showing all my web bookmarks so I can quickly go to Google, or BBC etc. With the Galaxy, all I could find was the web browsing icon which you need to open and the click to locate your bookmarks. Not very efficient.

The flash isnt that greatfor photo's to be honest, they are often very over saturated, I guess playing with ISO may help fix that? However the flash is very handy as a torch if you require one on the odd occasion.

P4U maybe do unbranded too, just try to make sure ;)

Just to throw another spanner in the works, there is now the Desire HD and Desire Z to look at. The screen on the Desire HD is bigger but only uses LCD not AMOLED so probably wont look quite as good but the extra size should be nice. It also has a 8mp camera and dual flash, so "should" be better than the Desires effort (though tbh they should just spend a little more and put a higher quality sensor unit in there!!!) at only 5mp and single flash.

See if you can find a friend or a shop that you can go into and have a compare :)

    Taa

The flash on the desire only makes a difference if you want to take pics in very low light or night time. In teh day time you wouldnt use flash anyway. Thats the only difference.

The galaxy has a better screen, better for gaming (desire can play all games anyway), faster, more memory for apps.

The desire feels better, has a trackpad (so useful), more ram.

Overall I would maybe only just go for the desire, but thats because the galaqxy doesnt have two things i NEED (trackpad and search key)

Otherwise I'd get the galaxy hands down.

This is from someone who has both.

The LED flash on the Desire has a kind of green-blue-ish tint, so I rarely use it other than for a flashlight, but the camera is actually pretty good.

desire also has a better overall build quality and feel
stats wise galaxy "seems" faster but in reality its not. their UI kills it and the whole rom is a mess.

That screenshot is not a lie, this is what leedroid performs like
Stadard froyo is still second from top on the desire only a few points from the 2.2+ nexus which is optimised

If you want to talk about rooting, then applying teh 1 click lag fix to the galaxy s takes minutes. The desire cannot touch the galaxy s in terms of speed and performance then.

Once the galaxy gets froyo, expect this to get even better.

To the OP, the images show the speed of each phone, as you can see, applying a simple fix makes the galaxy s by far the fastest phone available.

    wow, thats huge

good luck with getting froyo :p
i learned that from my first galaxy, samsung lie. i refuse to buy from them again

but yeah thats pretty huge, i must say ive not rooted one, only messed with stock

    EDIT:
i did link the image properly but couldnt be bothered cutting it as it was too big so turned it to a link, thanks for that :p

are the performance benefits mainly down to the GPU?
what results are average in linpak

The Hummingbird CPU in the Galaxy S is better than the Snapdragon in the Desire.
The SGX 540 GPU in the Galaxy S is way better than the Adreno 200 in the Desire.
The Galaxy S is slimmer, has a larger and better screen. The only reason to get a Desire is if you prefer HTC's software and/or look and/or minor advantages such as trackpad and flash.

because of the stupid way galaxy s implemented the internal memory card. Try it on a rooted one instead.

Either the Desire had android 2.2, was overclocked, or this is a mistake. Various bencmarks, linpack included, prove that the Hummingbird is faster.

Android 2.2 makes a huge difference. The Galaxy S should get it soon too.

This is stock (no overclock, android 2.1) performance :

The Desire has the same CPU as the Nexus, Evo and Incredible so should be in the same range. Droid X and Galaxy S Epic are two different, but similar, Cortex A8 designs.

ill be convinced when samsung get 2.2
the reason i ask this is because currently the quadrant is through the roof but it monitors the gpu aswell
linpak has always been high for nexus on the linpak for android.
the scores you see for galaxy S on the linpak site is for modded 2.2 froyo galaxy S. wouldnt this contain the jit enabled dalvic?

    edit: typo my bad
