Root Difference between "contact" and "people"

I bought a Motorola G 4G XT1040. My son has a Motorola G XT1033. We have study hard trying to learn the difference between "contact" and "people" concepts.

May someone here explain this matter please?

Well if I understand your question correctly... The Moto G XT1040 is on KITKat 4.4+ which has and uses "People" apk as the devices contacts app.
Where the Moto G XT1033 is still on the latest version of Jelly Bean 4.3 (unless your using a cistom KK rom) and uses the old traditional "Contact" apk as the devices contact app. They both virtually work the same... It just the KITKat is a newer/renamed app.
Or are you saying that you both have the "People and "Contacts app on both your devices?
