Help Edge always getting the edge over 3g

Just as the title says, why does it always go to edge even thought I know I have 3g signal here?

It got 3g for about 30 seconds and now its consistently on edge...

I know there is a LOCK 3g code someone posted but is that dangerous or undoable?

I just moved from an iphone to android today and this is one of the most dissappointing issues. (my new vibrant)
