whats the latest firmware ? and can i update it from my phone like on symbian ?

samsung galaxy s is slowly receiving 2.3.3 based on carriers i believe

no you have to use samsung kies software for windows over the air isnt currently used by the galaxy s

sorry being a noob but kies is similiar to itunes and i get through kies an official update without problems ?

yeah its the only official way to update the galaxy s. it gives you the most current version of android that your carrier supports

are this phones with the same carrier/locked sim as iphones ??
are they same problematically ?

yeah usually its very rare now to receive and unlocked phone

yeah . but .. is it so problematic , buggy if it is unlocked and used like iphone ?
cause iphones unlocked are practically not very stable

If you take your time, read and follow the instructions properly, I can assure you Kies is very easy to work with.

You need to download the latest version, which is often NOT the version that is listed in other places on the web. This is where 95% of the problems come from.

Patience and careful attention to detail will give you the result you want, fast and easy.
