Help Help: just tried to update firmware and.....

having had my Galaxy S since last Sept and periodically trying to connect it with Kies unsuccessfully I was surprised tonight when it connected.

It offered to upgrade firmware. I followed instructions until it advised that download had failed leaving me a purple screen on the phone. I've followed the instructions for an emergency firmware recovery but the Kies is now unsuccessfully trying to connect the device.

The phone displays a warning triangle "downloading" with a message of "Do not turn off Target!!!"

Can anyone help a non tecki? Is my phone knackered? how do I get back to where I was originally?

Had similar recently.
Open kies and select emergency firmware recovery.
Boot phone into download
Then connect to the pc
this should trigger the process.
