London Baby!
Hi all,

My lucky 8 year old is recieving a tablet for xmas but I didn't want to get him one of the kid specific ones as I am hoping it will last him a while and I think the kids ones look awful. What I need is an app that I can install that will essentially lock down the tablet. I will set it up with my email account etc.

I want him able to play games but not download as it will cost me!

I want him to be able to use the web but restrict what he sees.

I want to download Kindle so he can read the kids books I've been getting free, but not be able to purchase anything himself.

Essentially, that's it. Is there anything out there that you could recommend?

Thank you in advance.

You can filter accessible content in the Google Play store by pressing the left menu button on your Android phone and choosing "settings". After this you can choose the ratings of applications that anyone accessing the phone can see.

You can then look for the Pin option and setup one yourself so that nobody accessing that phone can buy applications without entering the same password that you just setup.

Kaspersky Parental Control is an application in the Google Play store. Here is its information:

Kaspersky Lab introduces the BETA version of a new application for smartphones and tablets. It provides an easy and convenient way to protect your kids when they’re online using the standard Android browser: WEB FILTERING: blocks sites with inappropriate content, such as pornography, violence and drugs APPLICATION CONTROL: allows you to control which applications can be run on your family’s Android devices Give it a test drive!

1) I would install free 'App lock', and lock all apps I don't want him to access. And 2) since it is very frustrating to see a load of apps you can't use I recommend to also install the free app 'Hide It Pro' or 'Application Hider' to hide all the apps you don't want him to use.

But he WILL find out, sooner or later, and he, like any kid, will see that as a challenge. And then you will have a bona fide hacker on your hands...
He will only have to root that phone to get full access to everything that you can't even access (on your own phone).
So chances are you will be raising a hacker...

The good news is though that he will be able to help you out with any problems you have with your phone :D. I'm betting that point will come within a year!

And while you're at it I would install free 'Lookout' (and hide it too): it scans his phone permanently for viruses and you can use it to locate him (his phone).

Lol, don't think that i'll have a hacker on my hands within a year, he's only just 8.

You'll be surprised.
If you do all the above you will effectively be setting him up to become one...
But it's not necessarily a bad thing to be a 'hacker'. A hacker after all is just someone who knows his way around computers very well. And that's a big asset in this century.
