Root Help!

I'm a noob who downloaded 588 a few weeks ago. I've never rooted before (and therefore don't have boostrap or any backups). Do I need to be rooted to install this using method one? I'm worried I dug myself into a hole here... If I do need to be rooted is there any way I can root my phone with 588 having never rooted it before? Thanks for your help guys.

I know for sure if all else fails you can SBF back to froyo and start over, but i think you might be able to use gingerbreak to root a leak version but i might be wrong.

i'm pretty sure it works on all except .595 and above. Try it, what ya got to lose? if it doesn't work, nothing happens.

Yes you have to use gingerbreak to root 588. But your easiest option really is to sbf back to stock froyo and use method two and install the 2 files for the 596 release. Of course you will root froyo with z4root and install droid 2 bootstrap in order to put the 596 on your dx. Grab the links you need at the top of the forum.

I used to gingerbreak so that I could get bootstrap and then went ahead and installed .596 worked like a charm! Thanks everybody
