With rooted phone there are a number of options. Very high in the list is adaway from fdroid open source repository.

But do support your developers also!

If the app in question does not have a reason (other than ads) to access the internet, another option is firewall.

a good firewall for rooted people is afwall+

a good firewall for non-rooted people is netguard

Both are open source apps and very easy to use.

Spending the small amount of time needed to get a firewall working is a good investment in your security imo. It reduces the number of apps that can potentially send your data outside your phone. Then you can concentrate more carefully on screening the remaining apps that do require internet access to ensure they are very trustworthy or don't have sensitive permissions.
