Root I need some help to S-OFF my Desire

Hey.

I have decided to S-OFF my HTC Desire and have custom MTD layout but i'm not sure exactly how to do it... I also have the following questions about having an S-OFF device.

1) Will the boot screen before it boots into the ROM still be the white screen with 'HTC' in the middle or will it change and say Alpharev or something?

2) Will having the custom MTD layout mean some ROMs (Including the stock one) will not work/fit because the system partition will be smaller?

3) How would i get the S-ON again, the existing HBOOT back and the standard partition sizes back?

When you run an RUU it returns the phone to an out-of-box state - 100% stock in every way

oh right so stock ROM, HBOOT, Recovery, everything? and how do u run the RUU cos i have noticed the RUU's are .exe files :S

Yes but if you go the custom MTD route rather than hboot route, you can just amend your sizes to suit.

Yes sir.

You can try just flashing Hboot tables via fastboot, but these are fixed sizes and have to flash a new hboot table everytime you want to change.

yeah i know.. the custom way is alot more flexible.. what sizes have you set for your system, cache and data? and do u suggest i set mine the same as im on the same ROM and everything as u?

also when doing the S-OFF from the disc it says do u want to use the Alpharev recovery.. do i do that? or do i say no and keep clockworkmod?

I am gonna do this today i just need to know what sizes your recomend for the partitions SUroot... and whether i should say yes to using that Alpharev recovery or just use ClockworkMod still??

Just keep your normal recovery.

I have 110MB for system, 25 for cache but I cut my rom down drastically so yours wont fit. My rom before flashing is 63MB.

Look in "Quick system info" and look at how much space your rom takes up and just make it a little bit bigger

ok will do.. what did u do to your ROM to cut it down that much? and also you say a little bigger... how much bigger in MB?

I cut out loads of /system/apps I dont use.

My rom is 63MB, flashed at 106MB (sorry my system is 115MB not 110) so I have nearly 9MB free.

You have to take into accuount flashing themes and apps can take up system space if you're adding files or replacing files with bigger ones.. Give yourself between 5-10MB free

ok will do.. cheers - also if everything ever goes wrong and i have to put rhe RUU on my phone.. if i re-root with unrEVOked and flash my current GingerVillain nandroid will it be back to normal again.. can i just flash a nandroid just like that?

Yes you can but if you had custom MTD before you RUU and Your nandroid was done on a custom MTD also, you must set up custom sizes the same as before (as if first time) and repatch boot image of the nadroid restored before boot.

This reason does mean that Hboot is easier, but it depends what you want. Ease of use or no wasted space.

ok then.. but if i do a Nandroid with the custom partitions then go back to stock RUU again will i not be able to flash it on the normal partitions because of it not fitting or some other reason? or both ?

IMO as a starter, may be you can start with bravo sense table(as it fits most of roms except hd) and after some experience go ahead with custom

ok but if i flash my nandroid from having custom partition sizes onto the bravo partition table it will actually work wont it?
