I think that you want to do the following -

Install TWRP, instructions are earlier in the thread, and we're happy to repeat them (not sure if we're up to date, sorry, or if you've already done this).

Make a nandroid backup.

Install SuperSU using TWRP and the zip package found here -

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

Then - redo rumrunner.us. :)

I have almost the same configuration as edgar333 (see my HBoot info below), and really want to root... but I keep stopping every time I see the warning from HTCdev that:
unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings.
Does it TRULY delete everything? The biggest reason I want to root is so that I CAN backup everything with Titanium Backup, so that app data can be transferred to a new phone in a few weeks.

The apps themselves, I don't mind re-downloading... it's the app-data I'm concerned about losing...

For example, some of my games have taken many hours to unlock their advanced levels.

One app contains work configurations which required 2 weeks worth of emails to numerous departments and a corporate security audit to obtain. I really don't want to go through it again if it can be avoided.

I had never heard about Helium Backup before. The app description sounds like it will do what I need. I suppose I can test the backup by restoring it to my BlueStacks emulation.

Helium Backup seems to provide the backup I need (thanks EarlyMon), so after a full backup, I proceeded to unlock my bootloader via HTCDev, then continued with RumRunner. After 2 failed attempts, I realized that somehow my Windows had lost the drivers. After reinstalling them, I get a TINY bit further, but it refuses to fastboot into the bootloader.

!! Do NOT for any reason taunt, unplug, drop, eat or pet your device !!
Please wait....

Checking for updates......
Test 1: Rebooting into bootloader
Waiting for fastboot (120/120)
Connection failed!!
FIX IT, yes, YOU fix it now!!!FIX IT NOW!!!!!
Press ENTER to exit

So now I've got an unlocked bootloader, and stock ROM, and all my apps are gone, and I have no idea why it won't fastboot. I am using the same computer, with the same USB cable on the same port as before... the only thing that's changed is the unlocked Bootloader.

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rebooted into the bootloader and... still have S-ON. Re-read the guide, and I'm 100% certain I didn't miss a step. Any idea why I don't have S-OFF?

Reboot, recheck (probably will be the same), and then re-run rumrunner.

See if that helps - every so often, it needs to go more than once.

Thanks for all your prompt responses EarlyMon.:adore:

I rechecked, and retried 4 times before posting - I didn't want to look silly for giving up after one try ;)

I downloaded a root-checking app (Got Root?), and when I ran it the 1st time, SuperSU prompted me for permission to grant it root access. Got Root? then reported my phone as rooted. This got me to wondering if the RumRunner process was requesting root access, and I wasn't seeing it (since root is not granted if no response is given), so I tried again, tapping the screen to keep it alive. Lo & behold, yes, it was asking for root access for the ADB Shell! I granted access, but RumRunner failed anyhow :secruity:. When I checked SuperSU, it had a new remembered setting for the ADB Shell to have access, so I tried RumRunner YET AGAIN... This time it proceeded through the sanitizing process!

Many reboots later (and numerous pop-ups of the ADB shell commands being granted root), I now have an unlocked, rooted EVO LTE !
