Moving Apps from Droid to X?

I have several friends that have upgraded to new Android phones and they were told by Verizon that they had to go and get each app they had on the old phone. Is there not away to do the switch where things transfer over?
I understand moving the card and taking contacts and stuff but the apps stay elsewhere. I do not wish to upgrade if they can not move your apps and set up to new phone.
