New HTC Hero user in need of help

Let me first say that I know very very little about smart phones. Never had one before and decided it would be a good buy. I wasn't wrong. But now I keep hearing there are ways to make it run better and more efficiently by "rooting" it. What is this and how can I do it? With no prior experience this has become quite overwhelming and I fear I may throw my phone against the wall soon. Links to video would be ideal. I appreciate any and all help. And so does my phone.
