Help New mail notification not going away...need help

I'm using K9 mail and when ever I get new mail I get the mail icon in the upper left corner of my screen...this is fine. After I check my mail and read it or delete it, the icon (notification icon) doesn't go away. Shouldn't it do it automatically?? If so, how do I set this? I can't figure out where the setting is.

I'm not sure about k9 mail app, but I have this happen with stock Gmail app once in a while. I have to go into All Mail and find the one(s) that says inbox and either mark read or delete. That might be happening to you too.
