Note 2 update unlocked my phone

Hi, I've had my note 2 for almost a year now, it's on 3 and I was thinking of getting it unlocked and bought a code off ebay. In order to unlock it I had to put a different network sim in my phone, I put the sim in and it was accepted, now am I correct thinking my phone got unlocked due to the update?

Oh and I wasn't asked for the code.

No because in November I tried to use my o2 sim in the phone but I couldn't, so rang 3 and they said it's locked to 3 and I have to pay
