My phone unpredictably generates DTMF tones , which is a PITA when calling automated menu systems, as it will get you into menu items which were called by the DTMF tones. This happens for up to about 30 secs into a call. Anyone experienced similar behavior?

Never have experienced this. Are you typing a number, for example "2" and it adds a second "2"? Or you do nothing and it automatically sends a DTMF tone?

It happens AFTER the connection to whatever number has been established, and, yes, it automatically sends DTMF (dial) tones.

Are you touching the phone/dial pad with your face? No insult intended by the simple suggestion...

Good thought, don't think I do, but I'll try placing calls with speakerphone.
Then again, don't we all touch the screen with our faces? ;)
