The Samsung Moment is supposed to ship with stock Android 1.5, but with 2.0 being released very shortly - (even before the Moment is actually released), does anyone know if the Moment will be able to be updated? Do the Android updates get pushed by the carrier or by the mobile phone manufacturer? It would suck to be stuck with 1.5...

I'm sure they are not gonna lock the phone down to 1.5. Even the G1 is going to be able to get 2.o so I don't see why the Moment wouldn't.

Im pretty sure they said it wouldnt be an OTA update. Thats not to say you wont be able to update to 1.6 or 2.0, but rather that you will have to manually do the update.

Because it would be ridiculous to think a company would release a device knowing it can't take full advantage of it's ability, and then not provide a relatively simple software upgrade to the consumers to allow them to better utilise the device. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Google requires them to provide software updates up to a certain point, be it version number or time frame.

Thanks Gremlyn for wonderfull and logical explanation. It seems you don't have Galaxy, because you'd recognise why I was asking that.

Basically yes, they aren't allowing ANY updates. Only way to receive update is to hope recent buyers with newer fw would come here and export their ROM. And notice that updates are only about bug fixes, Donut is not coming before 2010. And bug fixes are slow, there are some bugs that are not fixed from the earliest july builds, like basic wifi functionality (wifi unable to reconnect), 3d not working etc, etc. Have a look at i7500 forum...

I did some poking around last night, and havent they (Samsung) regularly released updates (not OS updates mind you) for bugs and issues almost monthly for the Galaxy? At least from what I have seen.

Bugs often take time to be worked out, and rather than release a new update everytime they fix one small problem, they prefer to keep to a timed release allowing for more things to be fixed. You wouldnt be happy if they fixed one thing, but that fix broke something else would you? Of course I come from the MMO world where updates almost always mean something else gets broken in the process.

You completely contradict yourself by saying they arent allowing ANY updates, but then say Donut isnt coming before 2010. So which is it?

I emailed Samsung support asking them whether it would be available - here is the worthless response I received:

Thank you for your inquiry. We are unable to speculate when/if a software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion. Please feel free to check back with us periodically for updates.
Do you have more questions regarding your Samsung Mobile Phone? For 24 hour information and assistance, we offer our new FAQ/ARS System - Automated Response System.

Yeah, the funny thing is I rated the response as completely unhelpful and then clicked the link to send another message if it didn't answer my question - and I repeated my question a little more forcefully. The response? The exact same canned answer ... twice.

Nice huh? A vision of the kind of support one can expect from Samsung I suppose?

Well Im sure they are being flooded with questions about it right now. I can understand not wanting to say anything and then it turns out to be bad info, because the public would chew them up about it.

I dont understand why they dont have a reasonable answer for this worked out already. I mean 1.6 was out prior to shipping the Moment and we didnt get it. 2.0 will be out soon enough and they cant say if/when we will get it?

    My question
The response as I mentioned was the same.

as a galaxy user and someone extremely active i find you are being a bit dramatic and while updates are not discussed the last updates were only 3 weeks ago and were to fix bugs, never the less they were updates and came via nps for the carrier that accredited them.

its easy to make assumptions because of lack of information but you are an example of why wierd rumours come out as you talk as if its fact when in the best part its fiction.

samsung are crap generally but lets not over exaggerate the truth.
at least we are not orange tatoo users who have gmail and gtalk removed because the operator modified the software and doesnt know what they are doing.

Just a theory, but what incentive does Samsung have in upgrading the Moment to 2.0? The phone does what it's suppose to do...

    1. Send and Receive calls
    2. Send and Receive Text messages
    3. Access Sprints optional services
    4. Send and receive emails
    5. Access the web

    6. No exploding batteries
    7. Working AMOLED
    8. Sturdy case
    9. Retain existing customers (probably some precentage)
    10. Pursuade new customers (probably some precentage)
    11. Take away potential Droid customers (probably some precentage)

If they hit these precentages, they're golden. Done deal.

So what is their incentive to pay a half a dozen software engineers to upgrade an already existing, working, and saleable device?

Wouldn't you rather put these engineers towards porting 2.0 into new hardware?

I'm starting to see Samsung as the new Sony of this decade. A company that has the resources and money to put out the latest. Whether it works or not - they can absorb it. Unlike Apple, Palm, or even Motorola. And being a direct competitor to Sony in almost every arena their out to do better.

Did you really just ask that question?

The phone is brand new. They will be working, at some point, on 2.0 for future devices. Its not unreasonable that something we just purchased ship with, or at the very least, be updated later with the current OS.

So no. I don't want them working on future devices if the plan is to kick out product and be done with it. Other devices will receive the update, that alone should be enough for us to pressure Sprint to light a fire under Sammy if they decide not to update.

Agreed. However, Samsung does have a pretty bad history of releasing phones and neglecting to update them

    *cough--instinct--cough*

Their incentive is their whole product line!!!! If they treat me like shit as a Samsung customer, I will not buy another samsung product....nothing...TV....coimputer monitor....phone....NOTHING!!! It is in their best interest to provide the best product and experience as possible or I will not buy ANY of their products.

I was an Instinct user and they cranked out about 5 updates in the year that I owned it. That is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison since their is now a third party involved(Google/Android).

I do think everybody is freaking out. There is not a damn thing we can do at this point except wait and see. If I were a betting man, I would be willing to bet that we WILL see 2.0 on this device. Obviously, that is pure speculation on my part. I do think Android in general is beginning to gain traction and this is only the beginning.

either way we just need the moment rooted and things will progress.....it has been out for 5 days everyone needs to calm down

I want 2.0, but honestly, I think the phone is great without anything else.

I am enjoying my phone so far but if an update is available (that could take care of/eliminate bugs) I'd say lets upgrade!
