Help unable to access web while on phone

Excuse the 'newbie' question here but I recently purchased my EVO 4G and comparing it to the iphone. WHen on the phone, how do you access the web or have access to send/receive email, sms messages, etc. It appears that teh only way I can access these things is to hang up. I know my ipnone has the ability to surf the web and be on teh phone, what do I need to do to get the access on the evo??

On my Hero I press the home key to start multi-tasking. You can access you phone call afterwards by dragging the notification bar down.

You have to be using 4G (WiMAX in your case).

The advantage of CDMA (your normal 3G stuff), used by Sprint for example, is clearer voice and fewer dropped calls, but you get one or the other - full data or voice but not both at once. It's a trade-off.

The EVO is a CDMA phone. You can't do it.

Well, the the OP can with 4G as stated above. The Evo is actually CDMA and WiMax (refer to its specs).

However, I think the OP's question was regarding the specifics on how to leave the call screen without ending a call -- not about the possibility of simultaneous voice and data.

Just to summarize in one post:

If you're trying to do simultaneous voice and data, you need one active radio for each. The iPhone, on AT&T, can do this in 3G covered areas because it will do data over 3G(UMTS/HSUPA), and voice over GSM. Phones on Verizon ONLY use CDMA, and most of Sprint's phones are the same way. The Evo, being a 4G phone, can do data over 4G and vocie over CDMA. So, if you're in an area with 4G, you get voice and data. If you're not in a 4G area, it's one or the other.

Thanks everyone. Actually my question was geered more toward having voice/data at the same time. Finding out that I have to use the 4G ability helps. I'm in a 4G area, I'll turn it on and keep the phone charged (heard 4G drains the battery; anything to retain battery life?)
