ok guys I'm answering my own question in case anyone else needs to know. So those MMI codes don't work anymore obviously. There is 2 ways to find out currently if your phone is unlocked:
#1 get a sim card from a different carrier, if it prompts for a sim network unlock code it means the phone is still network locked. If it doesn't prompt and you can use the new sim, it means the phone is unlocked (obviously). If you want to know which carrier it is locked to there is also a cool tool which costs $1.50 for Samsung phones. It seems accurate and if it's not locked it will say unlocked. see here if you need it: https://canadaunlocking.com/imei-checker
To unlock any carrier sim card you need sim network unlock pin. above code is not universal. It will work with older android os like nougat marsh mallow etc. Latest android 10 and pie 9 it don't need just insert other sim card and it will ask for code.
Sim Network unlock pin is generated from Imei number but you need many other details to get it. if you have Samsung mobile then you need to provide 1) imei number, network on which mobile is sim locked, country where mobile is locked. They will charge dollars for it here is other alternate method for sim network unlock pin.
