Apps are stored in at least three different places.

1.) for Default Programs that come on the phone... /system/app
    2.) Paid apps... /data/app-private
    3.) Free apps... ???

possibly someone with root can varify these directories ...

When I do a "# ls -R | grep [appname]" it doesn't like the grep like normal linux would.

app names are not name like I would normally expect ...

say "PhotoPro" might be /system/app/photopro.apk ...
but is actually might be something like /system/app/com.android.ver.photopro.apx

So I don't know, since android is not linux.. but only linuxLike... not everythig is the same ??

You need a root-enabled file manager to see the apps. Linda will show the folder as empty, but they're in there. Use Root Explorer from the Market and you can see them.

Oddly enough the non-root-enabled file managers can see what's in /system/app. Not sure why that is...
