Unlocked version for T-Mo U.S.

Can someone give me a primer on the pluses and minuses of going with the unlocked version of the SGS instead of the T-Mo Vibrant version? I saw a demo today of the Iphone 4 face time app and I like the FFC. I know we don't have concrete evidence that T-Mo has deleted the FFC. But, if they did I'd like the version with the FFC.

Well we have no idea what the differences are yet if there are any.

The only suspected differences from cellphonesignals image and original galaxy s is the front faced camera and 4 buttons instead of 3. everything else aside from those two things would be the same.

This is my last hope b/c i am on tmobile but I want the euro version and not the "gimped" down USA version.

hmmm....that actually dosent sound like a bad idea. If anyone has a teardown vid of the GS, i def would like to see it. If its anything like most of the other phones on the market, this would be as simple as plug and play.

At first I was thinking I could just find a spare front facing camera from a Euro version through a supplier online and install it into the Vibrant, however the front screen may not have the "clear hole" for the lenses to see through....lol....thus instead I am now thinking of putting whatever parts necessary (motherboard?) to get T-Mobile's 3G working from the Vibrant into a Euro version Galaxy S..then I will have a "complete" Galaxy S. Won't be cheap though.

What do you guys think?

I think this is very feasible. This is a great idea. I do not see why this wouldn't work. I would assume a re-flash of the roms would be needed (maybe) but thats a small issue. When i think about it more, i think your method will be just like swapping out a mobo in a pc. B/c these are essentially both samsung products, im assuming that everything will be compatible (same connectors and connections).

One thing though, can you confirm that the radios are located in the mobo and not somewhere else in the phone?

And as far as cost, i can think of a few ways to make the cost alot cheaper. If you can't think of any PM me and ill tell you what im thinking.

Hey... check out this tear down of a G1. Notice that the 3g components are all located on the Main PCB. Im not sure if this is a standard, but i have a feeling that it is. If so, a main PCB board switch between the vibrant and galaxy s should work.

Okay, just did some more digging.....if you remember I posted a couple of threads about the full disasembly of the Galaxy S a while back, there was a video one and a picture one...well, the picture one shows a lot of good close-ups on all the internals of the phone, so I searched through it again and I found this:

It shows proof that whatever controls the frequency bands is in fact on the motherboard/CPU.


Once I disassemble my Vibrant I will compare the motherboard/CPU to the one in this pic....if it is exactly the same layout then my theory should work.

I will be able to swap my Vibrant's CPU into the Euro Galaxy S and have a complete U.S. 3G enabled Galaxy S!!



Think about this guys.....you can have the best of BOTH worlds....use the custom built Vibrant in the U.S....when traveling abroad swap the Euro CPU back in and use the phone out there......

Theoretically, if you use the vibrant's main board (which contains the 3g radio) in the galaxy s and re-flash a galaxy s rom on the custom unit, it should have no issues with butons b/c basically, it will be a galaxy s except it will be able to utilize tmobile's 3g signals. Please correct me if this is not logical.
