loud alarm

Is there a way to change the notification sounds from a single "ding" to something that can be called an alarm?

I am used to the Palm where an alarm can be set for any event. The alarm is loud and vibrates and repeats at least 2 twice more, at 5 minute intervals, so it does wake me up.

The Desire alarm seems too inflexible and too quiet.

Sorry if I did not make myself clear.

I am not talking about "Alarm" but the notifications in Calendar. I want to use them as a wake up alarm.

Alarm only seem useful if you need to wake up the same time every day or want to set an alarm near the required time.

I setup an event in my Calendar, hours, days, weeks, months in advance and want to be woken up at the appropriate time say next Sunday fortnight at 7:30 am for a 9:30 appointment. I will setup this event today and forget about until 7:30 that Sunday when the Desire will ring loudly to wake me up.

You can do this. Go into calendar, press menu / more / settings / reminder settings / select ringtone. You can then select whatever alarm tone you want from the choices available. For example if you have Zedge or Rings Extended (or something similar) installed they will come up as options for you to use to pick a suitable alarm tone (as well as the standard HtcRingtonePickerActivity).

You can also set it to vibrate using the same menu options.

Not really possible. The calendar isn't designed to wake you up.

I have to agree with nx1977 here. Why would you want to use the calendar for this, if the phone comes with three rather nicely configurable alarm clocks, each configurable for time + weekly schedule + ringtone.

(personally speaking I use one + the countdown timer, but alas, I have been told I am weird like that) ;)

Can I set an alarm to ring on September 13th at 9:30am 2010 and another to ring at July 30th 2010 at 6:45 and another to ring on 2nd May 2011 at 10:45pm and another on 21st December 2011 at 7:30 am all linked to events with descriptions of the event plus notes added now, at the time of the event or later; the entries and alarm set to be made today then forgot until the time of the alarm? This is what my Palm can do and I am trying to replicate.

Did my suggestion work?

So a step back from my now very old Palm PDA?
Sadly, yes.

There are a number of issues where it's evident --and a real shame-- that Google (Android Inc.) didn't do usability studies with existing PDA UI's, and missed out on a decade's worth of UI goodness. :(

Anyhow ... nobody makes pda's anymore. You will be less disappointed if you stop comparing your new "smart" phone to your old pda. Bluntly put, it's not a pda with phone capability, it's a phone with some pda-like capabilities.
