why android ?

Hi all.

I have been looking into getting a new mobile for a few months now and have read many hours of articles and am still not really sure of what to do.

Just wondering if anyone can assist me in making a descission.

was considering and almost made my mind up on iphone4 until I found that android have alot to offer and its only growing and growing.

What I want is somthing that can to everything that can do what the iphone can do and in a way that i dont have to be a programmer to use and install apps. ?

I notice that alot of videos that the HTC android phones do not seem anywhere near as smooth or sensative as the iphone which concerns me a bit.

I also need a really good camera and video camera with a good flash as i use it alot.

So can anyone give thethe pros and cons of an android phone over iphone and which phone would you recommend ?

That's something that nobody can predict for you. Installing app is easy, there is a Android Market app on all Android phones like the iphone app store. To uninstall Settings>Applications>select app>uninstall.

I had iphones for 3 years and my N1 is just as nice visually.

I also need a really good camera and video camera with a good flash as i use it alot.

Go to a store with a demo unit and see if its good enough for you.

Android can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. You can use the phone for a life time without a file browsing app or choose to use one and micromanage your phone.

All that having been said, with my experience with both phones, I still choose Android. If you do decide to jump in with us (We have deserts!) this forum is a great place for questions.

I do listen to music a bit and use my current nokia N96 and 3.5 jack out to my car stereo and use the built in radio daily.

I'm sorry, I don't know what the best cameras are atm because I don't really use my mobile's camera at all. engadget has a camera section in all their in depth reviews and they make some good reviews, try searching their site for the phones your thinking of.

I use my phone in the car the same way you do too. The music player Meridian is perfect for the car because it has gesture support. One finger swipe down on the screen will forward to the next track, up is previous track, right in fast forward, etc..

I no phone in the history of phones has required you to be programmer to install or use apps! Installing apps on Android is like installing it anywhere else you go to the Android markert(which is there appstore) you login and select the app you want to install. Or you download and an Apk file and select install. How would that be difficult?

I don't recommend a HTC phone yet if you're looking for a good camera. It's the only area where HTC really falls down. Go for a Sony Ericsson Android phone, they know how to make good camera phones. My old k800i has a better camera than my HTC Desire.

Or a 3GS for that matter. Since 4.0 on my mothers 3GS, its bogged down all to hell sometimes. Guess they just can't manage multitasking, and thus the reason for the massive RAM boost in iP4

My aging here is just as responsive as my iPhone 3GS was. A newer Android like a HTC Desire or a Nexus one will be even better still.

It seems people are believing apples FUD about android.

I have a Mytouch slide. My BFF has an Iphone 3gs. She came over and we played the game who has the better phone. Our phones were nearly identical. The touch screen responsiveness was equal. The apps she had, I had. The ease of use was the same. The only differences? I had the genius button and could speak requests to my phone. I had flash on my camera. I could customize my screens and my modes. The only thing she had that I didn't was SLIGHTLY better screen resolution when playing videos. I wouldn't have even noticed had they not been side by side. My husband and I both have TMobile even more plus family plan (the no contract plan) and it is 69.99 a month a piece for us being on this plan so TOGETHER we pay almost the same per month that my friend pays only for herself. AND we have unlimited everything and she has only a certain amount of internet. Speaking of internet, the speeds for downloading were identical. We both pulled up Youtube and watched the Eclipse trailor side by side and they pulled up and played together. As for ease of use, the mytouch slide is VERY user friendly. You can use it just like an IPhone and never do anything heavier with it if you don't choose. It DOES have more capabilities than that though, and if you want to play around with it you can do all kinds of things. I'm not technical at all but I've been playing around with some of the more techie functions and enjoying myself.

meh ive played with a friends iphone 4gs and his old 3gs and i have a nexus one. i wont say any one phone is better then the others. they both seemed just as responsive, the only thign i really noticed was the iphone took longer to rotate.

camera? its a phone so dotn exspect miricals. however my Nexus one cam is better then my 200 buck digital so i guess its decent enough. video seemed fine aswell. i cant say which is better but i cant say i use the cam much anyways.

i choose android because its open sorce, because it seems with a more comfertable group of designers, and most importently because i have way more freedom with my phone then i felt with the other two competitiers for me (apple or winmo) i like everything about android so far and i like what im getting. most importently i liek that if android were to ever become a hinderence, i have the ability to switch to a 3rd party develeoper for further phone updates and resorces (which a few exsist to choose from) so if i really want, i dont even have to stay "android" if the boat starts to sink.

For the most part Android isn't that more Open than Windows Mobile in fact in a few ways in less open than Windows Mobile. While there is hardspl to install custom roms. You can hack it without going through some Jailbreaking (iPhone), Rooting (Android), or Helo0x2 (Symbian). There is rarely the need for such a process in Windows Mobile because you don't need to for installing apps onto the Sd (Android root required), installing Linux distributions(Android root required, iPhone Jailbreaking required), accessing critical system files(Android root required, iPhone jailbreaking required), tethering (Android root required, iPhone Jailbreak required), and changing the theme(Android root Reqired, iPhone jailbreaking required). While you can install unsigned apps on both Android and Windows Mobile, you can't on Symbian or iPhone. However Google has said that tethering and app2sd are coming in Android 2.2 so that mostly fixes my concerns with Android. However I like both platforms I do like Android better because it is less clunky than Windows Mobile.

Windows Phone 7 does suck very hard but it is completely different from Windows Mobile. I do think Windows Phone 7 will fail from high and strict system requirements, the fact that Windows Phone 7 doesn't cater to Microsoft's key audience power users, the lack of very basic features like multitasking, Adobe flash, microsd cards, filesystem, tethering, native code, and copy and paste, lack of application support because no existing Windows Mobile apps work with Windows Phone 7 and no incentive to develop for Windows Phone 7, the fact that Windows phone 7 costs money while Android, LiMo, Meego, and Symbian are completely free and opensource, windows Phone 7 is a closed platform, Windows Phone 7 is simply too late, and the name Windows Phone 7 is just crap (put that in there for kicks ). That is my opinion on it Microsoft says Windows Phone 7 is an upgrade but truly it is a downgrade in disguise. Android, WebOs, Meego, LiMo and Symbian will beat Windows Phone 7.
