Just got the HTC Incredible, wondering if I made a mistake?

I waited for an Android phone, as the previous phone I was using was the Motorola L7c for about 4 years or so.

Verizon seems to be putting a ton of marketing behind the Motorola brand (the first "Droid" wasn't that great IMO) and now this "Droid X". The Incredible is all but absent from their marketing, even their main page on their website is dedicated to the X.

It's almost like they are throwing HTC under the bus here, and I don't want to be stuck with a phone that isn't really supported from their end. Also I don't want a phone that is already outdated in just 3 months.

Also while I really like this Incredible I noticed my 4 year old Motorola phone has better call quality in the incoming speaker than my Incredible. So that is an issue too.

Thoughts? I really like what HTC has done with this phone. Battery life isn't an issue with me as I don't do a ton of web surfing and using it today from 7 AM to 10 PM it was still at 70%. So my main concern now is how the speaker sounds in your ear - not nearly as clear as my old Verizon cell phone. I tried the iPhone for a week and it almost sounds like that, and we all know how much AT&T sucks.

I activated it on July 14th so I still have time to take it back. I'm going to go play with the Droid X but it just seems way too big. It's a little saddening as I waited so long for a new phone and I'm seriously thinking about going back to my L7c - the call quality is that much of a disappointment.

Well if the DX is too big for your liking, there really isn't many other choices left (and if you didn't like the first Droid, the Droid 2 probably isn't something you'd look into I assume). There is the Samsung Fascinate which is kind of like a center ground in terms of size between the Incredible and the Droid X.

As for not having a phone thats not outdated in 3 months, you are going to have that happened REGARDLESS of what phone you get. Thats part of innovation/advancement, so thats nothing you can control nor will you. Instead of worrying about that, concern yourself with what IS available, and what DOES suit your own needs. You want something that you enjoy and is functional to your lifestyle.

You might want to try switching to evrc-b. It's an advanced setting in your phone that will make incoming calls sound better. Not terrific, but better. It's pretty easily googled.

this is something i've noticed. the poor ole Incredible didn't have a quarter the amount of marketing that the Droid or X have, and yet it's been on backorder since like day 2 or 3.

that says alot about what people want in a cell phone. sure, it has its share of problems (at least it makes phone calls well, albeit some sound issues, apprently the OTA will take care of that), but it's the perfect phone for Verizon IMO. if they had planned better, the incredible could easily still be the flagship device for verizon, X or not.

either way, Android is literally exploding right now. this time next year we'll be seeing 25-30% market share, and that's good for everyone.

I would guess that the vast majority of the marketing is paid with money from Motorola and not VerizonWireless. HTC just didn't spend as much perhaps hoping to ride on the Droid mindshare that the original Droid marketing put in place. Don't know. I do wish HTC had spent more marketing money.

You only made a mistake if you want a very capable, customizable phone. The smartphone world is like the computer world was a couple of years back. Every time you turn around, there's something faster/better/whatever. Pretty much as soon as you buy a phone, it's outdated. Sooner or later, you just have to bite the bullet and know that that's just how it is.

It seems like as soon as you buy the latest and greatest, the specs of the NEXT latest and greatest come out before you get home.

I have the Incredible and I'm quite glad that I don't have the X. My wife's wanting an Android phone now and she's decided to order an Incredible and wait longer than she would for the X because of the locked bootloader.

Several reviews said that the Incredible was the best smartphone a few months ago. To the OP, it's an awesome phone. You didn't make a mistake.

Keep a close eye on the X forums for sure. Sounds like many people are doing just fine with their new phones, but there are some with issues like quiet speaker, buzzing earpieces, etc. I'm sure these are isolated and most are OK, but there'll always be a handful of new phones with problems. You could always try a replacement Inc and see if it serves you better or even find someone near you whose phone you could check.

I think if you even question if this phone was a mistake, then it was... for you.

This phone will be supported by one way or another be it over at xda or verizon/htc.

The front page was smeared with Incredible 3 days after it came out. Your point?

Motorolla has alot of push due to things like the bootloader. They are being urged to do that for many business reasons like insurance, warranties on the phones, etc.

Your sound quality sounds like that bug that mine doesn't have, so I can't say I understand.

If you're looking for an easy way, I suggest you go with the X but personally this has been the best smart phone I've owned yet and I've had a little bit of everything.

I played with it some more and the call quality issue seems to have worked its way out. It sounds pretty good now especially when calling other Verizon phones. I'm going to keep it, I like it more than the Droid X, it's just too big for its own good. I need a portable phone not a semi-netbook.

One downside I have noticed now though is the hard to read-ness outside in sunlight. It's pretty washed out.

It's too bad they had such supply issues with these phone I bet Verizon could've sold a lot more.
