Root my rooting rant

Ok now this isn't aimed at anyone so take no offense this is what I have just experienced and keep on experiencing...

when I first got my phone I thought yep I'll search the net know a bit more about it etc etc then I found out I can root it, similar to jailbreaking on the iphone. This was around early june when I first got the phone. Very first day I tried to root it using lekky's guide, did everything by the book but neh didn't work and today I found out it was because mine is a 0.8 version .

After hearing many speculations about the froyo release date being near the end of 2010 I just couldn't wait that long so I had another try at rooting today. This time I followed a guide on modaco or whatever that was made for 0.8, done that by the book then when I went to open update.exe it said verification failed  I must've read the thing about 20 times and then I thought stuff this.

After searching around again I found that one click root programme, installed that, installed the drivers, again did everything by the book, connect my phone to the pc run the .exe programme and its just stuck at that waiting for phone when the damned thing is actually connected and mounted as a disk drive .

I've searched everything, online tried everything, nothing but dead ends. Now I have to start my desire from fresh. I just feel like I'm left in no mans land, can't HTC just get a move on and release the damned thing so I can have apps2sd.

Are you talking about the unrevoked application? If so I had the same problems as you. I tried numerous times to root my desire but it just kept asking me to connect my phone to the computer. I was ready for using my laptop as an over priced frisbee.

To root my phone I downloaded Ubuntu and burned it to disc. I then rebooted my pc from the disc drive and used the 'test ubuntu from disc' feature so I could use the linux version of unrevoked. A long way for a shortcut but it worked first time.

EDIT: You will need to run the unrevoked file with root permissions. Do do this hit alt+f2. In the box that apperas type 'sudo' and then hit the space bar. You then need to navigate to the unrevoked file that you downloaded and click open. run this and it should now root your phone for you.

I finally rooted it and running the deviliian rom. Got a headache now. Credit goes to gek0, thanks man! Had to take the ubuntu root long way round.

woop!!! But...

Very first day I tried to root it using lekky's guide, did everything by the book but neh didn't work and today I found out it was because mine is a 0.8 version .

Be careful, because i thought by the book means you read everything, even this:

This guide lets you root only a HTC Desire which has a bootloader version of 0.75 or below.
