There are several Android and Sense services that run in the background by default. Services to check for new messages and emails, voicemail, app updates, system updates, to keep your clock and alarms running, services for all of your widgets and programs you have opened, etc. If you aren't having any problems then you have nothing to worry about. Android kills off low priority processes when it needs to free up memory, so it should never be maxed out.
