bad reception started last week

Hi all,

Late last week.. I noticed that my signal was getting low. I started to watch it more....

Normally I have at least half strength and great call quality. But now.. I see it down to 1-2 bars and even jumping into roaming for a few seconds. My data is also jumping from 1x to EDVO. I am dropping calls and not hearing each other A LOT!!!!!

I initially thought it might be Sprint had network issues. So i waited, but no change. And my family have other phones and have no issues.

I have not changed anything that had to do with signals. Phone was fine for a month since I flashed the new ROM.

FYI... I am on DC's last 2.1 ROM release before he left. I have never updated my radio (still stock). I have updated my PRL and Profile to see if it helped.

I could try to wipe and reload the ROM... but I cant see why that might be the case. Could a part of my Radio go partially bad??? Should I try one of the new Radio updates???

Yes, try different radios to see which ones work best.

BEWARE: Make sure that it is for the Sprint CDMA Hero and not the GSM one

yes.. i am hesitant to update the radio because of history of brick....

Hoping someone might have more insight... or other options to try before I do a radio update and/or reflash custom ROM.

Just change the way you hold the phone!

Yeah, changing radios is the way to go. You'll probably notice that some will give you much worse battery life too so you have to find the best combo.

what is the best radio update?

yes.. i am hesitant to update the radio because of history of brick....

i gave up ... trying to do something else...

so last night I upgraded to DC's radio he released last May.
[RADIO] Sprint Radio 2.42.01.04.27 - Page 10 - xda-developers

it went fine...
testing it out now....
I have not noticed any difference in performance yet.

got my fingers crossed.

I know geekforme.com lists the best radios for our heros, i'd check there, doesn't matter what rom you are running as the actual radio is a standalone type thing.

"Ev" to "1x" and drove my crazy! Made the entire internet and apps worthless and
very slow. I was up to date on everything.

Finally after many stupid "PRL updates", battery pulls, hard resets, Sprint sent me a'
new Htc Hero and it does the same damned thing!!

It get's ridiculous! I'm trying to use my phone for business, etc... and it won't stay
on "Ev" long enough to use my Facebook app!!

I'm ready to get the Iphone 3g and say the hell with this!

By the way... what is a "radio" for our Hero and where and how do we get a more
powerful one?

Radios Geek For Me – Sprint Evo 4g & CDMA Hero

I don't know all the specifics of how these differ from the stock radio, I've never flashed one as my 1-2 signal bars is enough on a CDMA network. Just research this page some and decide whether to make the jump.

you might want to do a google on phone radios.

but my best guess...
all phones have 2 way radios to connect and talk to towers and other devices
phone network radio
3G radio
4G radio
wifi radio
etc....

some times they upgrade the software to make the radio perform better; more effective and communicate better with towers or new tech on the towers... whatever...

This might help your phone connect better in some areas.. but worse in others.. Depending on the towers in your area and what has changed on them. You have to try a few that are out.. and see what works for you. I find there are 6 different radios for the CDMA Hero.

try at your own risk... Make sure you have right radio for your phone... there are some out there for the GSM heros and G1.... or other different service providers. DO not mix them up! this is the easiest way to BRICK your phone!!!!
