Incredible change to LCD poses problems for all of us

I would say you got the LCD screen. When I take my Incredible with the AMOLED screen, I cannot see anything on it. To see anything I have to cover it with my hand or take it into the shade.

That would be quite interesting considering that HTC hasn't made any DINC's with SLCD screens yet... ;)

Everyone has an AMOLED, period. End of story.

As for being able to see in the sunlight, I can do this and I have AMOLED. In fact, I can see better than I ever could with my LCD phone. Just adjust the brightness of the screen, it helps a lot.

Its also important to note a couple of things:

1. The list of devices being switched to LCD does not include the Incredible!
2. I could be wrong, but the phone is advertised as having AMOLED and it is clearly printed in the manual which among other things means that they would most likely have to change the sku and documentation.

thanks for saying that. i agree they would have to reprint everything and it would be to costly. im sure when the DINC 2 comes out it will change, but people need to relax for now and wait for it to happen before they get all worked up. agreed???

Actually, if you go to VRW site for Dinc, under features, it has became "3.7" 480x800 WVGA Touch screen", there is no mention of AMOLED anymore.

And this brings up an interesting question; What will happen if it doesn't move to something else other than AMOLED screen-wise. I just read on engadget that another manufacturer is also moving away from 3.7" AMOLED screens due to the supply shortage (Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011 -- Engadget).

I'm definitely not a conspiracy theory sort of person and am not trying to stir up any "The Incredible will be EOL'ed" rumors. But if the Incredible is going to continue being made and sold with the 3.7" AMOLED screen, and there is enough of a shortage of the screen (enough to push other models/manufacturers away from using it), how is that going to work? How can you manufacturer and sell phones when you don't have a supply of parts needed to do so?

So I'm just not sure that the fact that the Incredible was not announced as switching to SLCD is good news. It could mean several things, none of them good.

HTC switched the Nexus ONE and the Desire to SLCD to increase availability for the Incredible. That is a good news.

Exactly! It's a 3.7" wide video graphics adapter w/480x800 resolution. Resolution and display are two different things. The display is AMOLED.

I hear you though, it is not listed in the "Design" portion of the Incredible description.

I do know that when I went in to look at both phones (Inc and X), the sales rep said that the X was a replacement phone for the Inc., and that they would not be getting any more Inc. in.... :p

well, my sister just ordered and got her Droid Incredible two days ago. I thought the screen was definitely different than mine. If i can get it from her, ill throw up some comparison photos. I compared them both on 10%, 50%, and 100% brightness.

Her screen was more dull than mine and gave the effect of having a "grey" film over the colors. I immediately assumed she did have an LCD screen vs the AMOLED. I can recheck it later today but I was pretty positive yesterday that we had different screens altogether.

AMOLEDs seem to be hit or miss right now. From the beginning it seems that some Incredibles just look different. Regardless, it is not LCD since there are no LCD Incredibles.

well heres a question...... samsung is releasing a phone with super amoled display this might be reason why um amoled is in short supply

That wouldn't effect it, it's a different display. They are not even made on the same line.

Here's what happened: (I am going to use fake round numbers here, these are NOT real numbers)

Samsung can make 10,000 AMOLED screens a day. They reserve 5,000 for themselves to use on their own phones. They put the other 5,000 up for sale.

HTC signs a contract with Samsung to get 3,000 screens a day for the next 6 months. The other cell phone makers order the remaining 2,000 screens a day.

HTC realizes that the demand is a lot higher than they expected and they actually need 4,000 a day, not just the 3,000 they contracted for. They contact Samsung to try and update their contract and get more screens.

Samsung says "tough cookies, you get 3,000 a day like we agreed". They do not want to cut into their own supply (the 5,000 a day) to give to their competitor. And they can't take away screens from the other companies that have contracts with them, too.

And honestly, why would they?

At the end of the day, Samsung can only make so many screens. Only as many as their production lines allow. They have reported that they are running at full capacity.

Now they ARE opening another production facility to be able to produce more screens, but it won't be ready until late next year (or something like that, can't remember if it was late 2011 or early 2012). Until then, companies like HTC just have to make do with what they can get. For HTC, this means prioritizing which phones will use the AMOLED and which will have to use other screens like the SLCD.

There has been a lot of speculation on this thread, and it has taken a while for me to read it all.

So, let me get this straight:

1. The HTC Incredible might or might not be getting an lcd screen.

2. The HTC Incredible has not yet gotten an lcd screen. When it does, HTC has to tell us about it.

3. Nobody here can tell the difference between an SLCD and an AMOLED display. So, naturally, it is of utmost importance to determine whether we have an SLCD or AMOLED display. (see #2)

4. Some people can see the phone fine in the sunlight, some can't. (See Droid Incredible review -- Engadget, published 3 1/2 months ago)

Can we lock this thread? OK, can someone else lock this thread?
pretty please? with a cherry on top?
