Froyo 2.2 Overhyped?

I wouldn't say over hyped, it's all in the eye of the beholder. JIT, flash, and video encoding are really big steps, but some users may benefit more and some not depending on your use of the phone. Since I use LauncherPro, Handcent, stock keyboard, etc, nothing really changed for me. Browsing on the other hand is a whole new world now. I didn't notice any increase/decrease in speed, but mine was down-right zippy to begin with as i don't have alot running at once anyways.

(somehow my post ended up on the wrong thread earlier, re-adding here)

I dont see much differance in the update. Phone still runs about the same. Not much speed differance. Battery is still the same. Facebook sync finally works so thats cool. i synced with appbrain and hard reset my phone. For watever reason my apps after the reset are gone. So i have to start over. O well, didnt have that many. Anyways im not ranting. Just sharing my froyo experiance.

It was mostly over hyped by people on the forums.

Another alternative to backing up all your apps aside from AppBrain is "ASTRO" file manager. It's a free app and if you go to Menu > Tools > Application Manager/Backup - it will save all your installed apps (apk) into the memory card. So if you ever had to do a hard reset, just get ASTRO file manager and pull up the backed up apps again > select all > install. I love all these options in Android!! To the OP, I somewhat agree with your statement, but I think that as we see more and more apps tailored to work with Froyo we will start to see its full potential. I'm sure now that a wider group of people have it, all the bug reports and enhancement requests will drive Google to continuously improve it

- There is nothing about Battery mentioned in any Froyo press I've seen.

- Not much faster? How is that quantifiable, you do admit that it's faster though......

- The browser is slower because it's loading far more information, turn off flash to compare apples to apples.

Go back and read what you SHOULD be looking for. Then look for it.

With MoreIconsWidget, loading the apps to choose from took a while. Froyo is chewing through those.

With FolderOrganizer, loading the apps to choose from took a while. Froyo is chewing through those.

With Astro App Manager, loading the apps to choose from took a while. Froyo is chewing through those.

On the flip side, still working on getting Flash to work.

My take on it is the same as many on here... It's over hyped if you don't actually use your phone to its potential or you can't be arsed to experiment and work out how a certain app or function could actually benefit you.

How can Tethering NOT be regarded as a BIG improvement. From a technological point of view, it is amazing. Granted not new but to cram the facility into a handset that already works overtime trying to keep everyone happy is remarkable.
720 Video. C'mon guys, again, nowt new but a major improvement. If you upload stuff to youtube alot then it's going to be a massive benefit.
Think reporters capturing news, people who do video blogs, friends who capture something and want to share it on facebook or just show you on their device down the pub. The days of watching pixelated, incorrectly exposed clips have taken a huge step forward in being consigned to the bin....
Sync with iTunes...... C'mon now, allowing the facility to release those poor ba5tards from the Apple marketing machine and feel that they can now experience another format without worrying about loosing the hundreds of songs they'd purchased over the years.... Brilliant.
Speed... is it any faster? I'm not so sure as it is noticeably quicker. However it is a default comment for people with nothing else to say :D
And the biggy for most of us (judging by the complaints I read) Apps to SD. OMG!! How can you all just dismiss this as a minor upgrade? I have a 16Gb card just sitting idle really, yet I'm always being told that I have low disk space. It's ludicrous that the kit wasn't designed to run apps from the SD card. I'm no techie but I rekon there was a reason and I'm chuffed to bits that they have sorted it out.
OK so most of the apps at the moment won't transfer to the SD card but give it a few weeks and the developers will catch on and update or redevelop the app.
It's a MASSIVE step forward and will help keep your equipment current for many months to come :D
I for one appreciate the efforts of the folk who have made this possible and it kinda winds me up to see folk dismissing and dissing it just because it won't do one tiny thing. The fact is, it probably would if you understood your equipment and spent a little time troubleshooting. That's half the fun for me. If something doesn't quite work, can I sort it out? If I do, you can bet I learnt alot about the phone whilst working it out :D
Get involved and stop complaining I say :D

Did you read what Froyo is supposed to offer? Did you then look and see if Froyo delivered what they said it would?

I'm highly doubtful you did. Otherwise this thread wouldn't exist.

^This. They delivered what they said they would.

I've only been an Evo user for a couple of weeks but I've definitely noticed a speed increase from 2.1. Battery life is pretty much the same. No issues with anything i've done so far.
