Is it possible to rename app icons?

There is an App called 'Any Cut' free from the Market. This allows you to create Home shortcuts to anything and rename them. Popular shortcuts like directly calling a phone number or sending an SMS are supported. To use, just long-press an open area in Home & in the menu select Any Cut under the Shortcuts heading.

Hope this helps.

Ziani, I have Any Cut, what I'm wondering is if there is a way to rename the existing icons for installed apps, in order to rearrange the icons in the app tray alphabetically.

You can use anycut to place a shortcut to an existing app. The resulting icon will be the app's original icon, but you can now rename it too.

You can't re-arrange icons in the app tray, but you can place folders on the desktop, and put apps in these. You can then arrange those any way you want, not exactly what you wanted but it could help.

I'm also looking for a way to rename an app icon w/o creating shortcuts and more 'stuff' to take up room and resources on the phone.

You can't. The advice above doesn't take up more stuff, it just replaces the other icon.

Unless you mean from the actual application menu and not the desktop, they can't be renamed at all from app menu.

I believe if you have Go Launcher EX, it allows you to rename an app, whether on the HomeScreen App Tray or if its a shortcut.

I think you just have to long press the app and it brings up a menu to rename it. I've seen/done it on my SGS2, and the only apps I had installed that allow you to modify your phone to some extent were Go Launcher EX and Go Launcher Lockscreen.
