How to upgrade to 1.6?

I am looking at purchasing a HTC Eris, but one of the things that is now making me hesitate is the fact that it still has the 1.5 OS, and not the 1.6. I am going to be going on a trip in the next few weeks, and would love to use the turn by turn nav of Google maps, but it dosn't work with 1.5.

Now I have seen videos and comments about how people have loaded it onto their Eris, so I know it is possible, but how are they doing it?

Is there an upgrade to the OS that you have to do after you get it, one that will at least get you up to 1.6?

it appears that you guys may be correct. I have been looking at som many phones, that I think I was looking at the videos and stuff with the G1.

There has to be someone out there that has installed 1.6 on an Eris? Ah well. Maybe I will go with a Eris and a Droid to start with and see what I think of each. I do really like the style and feel of the Eris.

If anyone finds any information I would be happy to find out how to do it. The navigation is one thing that I would probably use the most of the updates.

Actually, I don't think that anyone could install 1.6 on the Eris because nobody has rooted it yet.

The Eris will get 2.0 and Google Nav before too long. There are other Nav apps that can be used on the Eris while you are waiting.

Nav4All is a solid navigation software, although very simple. It is free.

And. Viser Is highly rated and also free.

CoPilot live Keeps the maps on your SD card, so no data needed. Traffic and POI are extra. Said to be a great nav app. $34.99 one time purchase.

TeleNav Pretty nice (from my experience) offers just about everything. Free 30 day trial and $9.99 a month after that.

All of these offer turn by turn directions. Some of them use street names and some don't. Some are a little faster than others, but they all work.

The TeleNav app does look nice but I don't think it's available for the Eris. Couldn't find it in the Marketplace and when you choose to download from the website it only lists certain phones.

Interesting. None of the Sprint or Verizon Android devices are list. It could just be laziness on the part of TeleNav for not putting it out there. As far as the market goes, I don't believe it has ever been available on there. If you really wanted to try it, a quick call to customer service might do the trick. 1-888-353-6284

With the way the community seems, I am surprised that no one has rooted an Eris yet. Has anyone done any modifications to the Eris aside from Rooting? I am not sure what all is possible, but I am always interested in what is possible for a device.

Thanks for the links for the other apps, I will be sure to give them a try.
