Help Unlocked Desire - How to install the OFFICIAL Froyo.

I live in Southern California and I own/use an HTC Desire. I bought the A8182 model from a Canadian company and very very pleased with the phone.

I will not get the pushed OTA 2.2 from my carrier (AT&T), so I am wondering how to properly, manually install the official Froyo 2.2 update. I am not interested in any version of the update that is not an official update.

I have never rooted a phone before, and I really do not want to "root" my Desire to install an update. If that even makes sense...

Is there anyone who can give me some good advice here? I apologize for my lack of technical knowledge as this thread progresses, as I have none.

so how did it go? did you decide to root or not? i just ordered my a8182 for use on att, and thinking about rooting it also.
