Root How to Tweak the Kaos Froyo Rom for speed!

Here are a few simple tweaks I discovered to make your Kaos Froyo rom as fast or faster than most 2.1 based roms. These settings make a world of difference in how the phone responds and make Froyo a joy to use!

1. Ditch Adw and install Launcher Pro. 90% of the slowness comes from Adw!
2. Go to settings/display/animation and turn off all animations. They might look neat, but youll be surprised at how fast the phone is without them.
3. Under LauncherPro preferences, go to Advanced Settings and change the opening speed to 10 for both options.
4. Install setcpu and set it for 245,710 for normal use, and 245,480 for when the screen is off. Kaos rom is already overclocked to 710 so this is just for extra battery life.
5. reboot the phone after applying the tweaks and enjoy a very fast eris.

Seriously, after doing this my phone flies like it has never done before on any 2.1 based rom. Changing between apps is instant and everything is extremely responsive. I love this rom!

I've always wondered if compcache really does IMPROVE performance? I mean sure you're compressing memory in order to get more free memory. But in compressing the memory that takes up cpu cycles to decompress and compress so isn't any performance increase negligible at best? Anyone else have any input on this?

I enabled compcache and increased the vm heap size at the same time, and I can definitely feel the difference... I don't know if it was due to one or both of the options however. I think I'll try disabling compcache to see if it makes any noticeable difference. I'm more inclined to believe that increasing heap size is a better tweak.

Here is another useful one:
Under Spare Parts, select End Button Behavior and set it to Home, Then Sleep.

This way you can quickly exit out of any app by simply pressing the end call button. Press the button a second time to lock the screen. Not a speed tweak but really useful!

Ok I rarely use MMS, but I tested it and yes I also have a problem. I use Handcent, and I can't seem to download the image. I press the download button and nothing happens. I tried stock Message, and it force closes.

Edit: I only tested receiving a mms.

Just to ask the question, are you connected to 3G or WiFi when you try this? If WiFi, try turning it off and then try again.

See the KaosFroyo FAQ.

Hey bro good of you to post this informative thread!
I was wondering what/why you think makes ADW slower than Launcher Pro
when I've seen the complete opposite with my Moto Droid 1?

(I'm asking because I don't know, not to argue) :)

My girl has an Eris so I felt she needed to step it up since
unfortunately her phone (stock) was underpowered and
the Plain Jane ROM was pretty slow for some reason.

I found Kaos's work great on paper and so far it is running sweet.
I had to partition the Sd card because I take it froyo doesn't like
the EXT-2 or something to that effect.

What do you guys recommend for an app2sd card option?

It seems like a lot of people have different opinions on launchers. For me personally, ADW is very choppy at simple tasks like scrolling side to side. This makes the rom feel slow and makes the phone less responsive. Installing Launcher Pro makes for a night and day difference....at least on the Eris running KaosFroyo rom.

So if you're on that rom, give LauncherPro a try and see how it works for you. If you don't like it you can always switch back.

Isn't this the improper way to actually close out an app? This is like pressing the home button, and not the return, right?

some one want to walk me through how to set my setcpu app for better batter life? i have it installed but have no idea where to make the changes.

I'll use my profiles as an example

For the sleep profile I have it set low to save battery, but the max at 528 so there's no lag when getting a call. Using this set up I get almost 2 days of use on a full charge.

why do you have 2 battery options? and can you please post the rest of your profiles? i used to get 2 days with 2.1 stock and i would LOVE to get 2 days with froyo! thanks again man.

also, under the main tab, what are your settings?

I would if setcpu didn't freeze up after going to the profile screen sometimes. There is only one other profile not shown and it's the same as "Charging AC/Full", it's called "Charging USB/Full". As for the battery options, the 100% is for general use, and the other one is set to lower the speed when it gets below 40% in an effort to maximize battery life. Though I have to mention that not every Eris is the same and that the max OC speed can vary. I've seen people OC to 806, but mostly the average is 768. I use to run everything at 768 for awhile but decided to drop it to 748 (Not much of a difference really). So if you can, mess with it a bit, and see what's the highest you can OC it without it rebooting on you.

Edit- I forgot to mention I use the Seidio 1750MaH battery over the stock.

well ive noticed a difference already to be honest with you. for the "charging AC/Full", whats the priority at on yours?

well, i didnt realize you had the extended battery. hopefully i can squeeze a day and a half out of this one. im still experimenting, and REALLY like 2.2, but just those 2 things are keeping me from sticking with it.

I have it set to 60 priority, and the USB profile has the same priority. The stock battery is 1300 MaH so it's not that extended but it makes a little difference (Cheaper then the 3500MaH "Tank" battery, that's for sure). Hope you enjoy 2.2 like I do, it's pretty much my everyday use normal rom for now. The most I use my phone now a days is for music when I work out lol (I leave for basic soon so I'll be using it even less for awhile).

well, looks like the battery tweaks are helping. my only gripe is the fact that the screen stays on ALL THE TIME if im using the phone while using a wired headset. gotta figure that one out. i use the wired headset A LOT!!!

I fixed the MMS problem on my wife's phone. Mine didn't have the issue. I Tried all related fixes, but the only one that actually worked was flashing a 2.1 ROM, just getting logged in via google on the phone, letting it sync up. Then flashing back to my Kaos ROM..... (yes I did a NANDBACKUP before I flashed back to 2.1) oddly enough when I NANDRESTORED to Kaos... her MMS was fixed.

I did do all the kaos forum fixes rebooted, but none worked. Only after flashing to 2.1 (I used Ivan's Official 1.0).

Hope this helps some of you.
