Android 2.1 update - I don't get it...

The way I feel right now is best described by Peter Griffin's quote from Family Guy - "Now I may be an idiot, but there is one thing I am not, sir, and that, sir, is an idiot."

I don't consider myself an idiot, but I feel like one when searching for instructions on how to update to android 2.1. Tried googling the search term "how to update motorola milestone to android 2.1" (among many others) and got a page entitled Motorola Android Software Upgrade News with a table of countries and timelines. What happened to the good old copying of the same tutorial and posting it on your site and re-posting the same video tutorial on YouTube, which made it very easy to find? I found some SHOULS files and a video on YouTube of some guy doing a tutorial which I didn't fully understand. And of course there is also the risk of breaking your phone and since I just got it 2-3 weeks ago I'm still very careful with it. So please explain to me this mystical process or just give me some helpful links, I would REALLY appreciate it.

I have an unlocked Motorola Milestone (with an 8GB SD card) and I live in Estonia. I can provide more info if it helps.

Sorry, forgot that part. I'm running android 2.0 and when I check for system updates it says "Unable to connect - The device is unable to connect to the server. Try again later." I actually found some instructions on how to update to android 2.1 and 2.2. I think I can handle the process, but I'm not sure which file will work for my phone. Thanks for the link I'll definitely check it out.

If you have the Italian version, you can choose Italy as your country. You can also use the Italian service sbf file available here to upgrade to Android 2.1.

If you have the Italian Milestone your firmware configuration version (which you can find in Settings > About phone) should end with "IT_P011" if you have Android 2.0 or "IT_P023" if you have Android 2.0.1 installed.

I would do that, but my country (Estonia) is not in the list. Perhaps some other country would work as well?

Yes, any country will work. When you download from a Motorola Software Update country site, you are only downloading the Motorola Software Update application to your PC.

After you have installed the MSU app to your PC, run the app and connect your Milestone to your PC with its USB cable. The MSU app will compare the software on your Milestone with the information on the Motorola server. If there is a match, it will then tell you that an update is available, and you can download the update.

Let us know how it goes!

My phone is definitely Italian because it does end in "IT_P011", just like ashketchum said.

I suppose I should download the 2.1 (Service version) Italian SBF. Now, should I download the MSU app or RSDLite, or maybe both? Will any version work?

All the abbreviations and different versions of SBFs and apps make it very confusing. I don't want to break my phone so that's why I"m trying to understand the process fully and have all the right apps and files before I do it.

You've been very helpful guys, I really appreciate it.

MSU is designed to figure out which SBF is the correct one for your phone. It will compare the current software on your Milestone with the update software on the Motorola server and then it will download the one that matches yours.

RSD Lite lets you use any SBF to update your phone ... but it is riskier because you might choose one that is not compatible.

Hey Guys! I just downloaded the MSU and successfully updated to android 2.1-update1 =) Very easy, just had to connect my phone to my pc using the USB. Thanks a lot to everyone!

marmarinou you were absolutely right the MSU app did all the work for me. I understand there are apps that only work if your phone is rooted. How do I safely root my phone and keep the update?
