Sprint seriously needs a World Android Phone

With the recent confirmed announcement that Verizon will have a Droid 2 World Edition phone, let me say that Sprint needs to get their motor running and offer something similar. True, there are a few world capable phones on Sprint, but none that i know of are Android. 2 Blackberries (Bold 9650 with or without camera), the Samsung Intrepid, and the HTC Touch Pro2.

Considering that I came from the HTC touch (window mobile) family, the Pro2 might be the only one that I would feel comfortable using while overseas, but lets get real here, its no Android phone. Since using Android, I really can't go back to Windows mobile or any other OS. The other option would be to put Android onto the Touch Pro 2, but I rather not have to buy a TP2, modding it and possibly bricking it.

With so many international travelers I can't see them all being GSM users, i am sure there is a slight market for an android based world phone. Shoot, if Verizon saw the light, why can't Sprint.

If i am not mistaken there is a thread over at XDA that does just that. But its not fully working. i think one or two things don't work, but overall its passable.

sprint will carry the motorola xprt which is a world phone/android starting june 5th

not much hype about it but I am pretty sure I will trade in my optimus s for it.

I'm very disappointed in the form factor of the xprt. It looks like an old blackberry with the keyboard taking up half the phone. Small screen. Targeted at the business user. I have an Epic, but I am travelling quite a bit internationally over the next few weeks. I am switching back to my BB Tour for the next month. After June, I will not have any intl travel for a while so I will wait to upgrade next year. I'm holding out for something better.

I'm surprised Sprint did not launch a intl Epic, Evo, or Droid type of device with a decent size screen. Why would they go backwards?

Well I looked into it and I have to admit, its not bad. Although I am spoiled by my EVO 4G screen, the xprt could be my travel phone.

its Android 2.2 (which I am sure the devs can upgrade to 2.3 or even later)
Corporate email (my boss will love)
CDMA and GSM/UMTS(HSPA) yippee
3g Mobile hotspot for 5 devices
Access to Android Market,
5 megapixel camera
microsd slot with 2gb included support up to 32gb
etc etc

Only thing that puts me off is the small screen and tiny keyboard, but overall one nice phone.

I've also heard that the HTC Kingdom would also be a world phone coming to Sprint and that has a 4 inch screen two cameras, and faster processor. Although no date is specified.

So if that is the case, it seems that Sprint might have a winner in either of these two world phones.

I own a Motorola Backflip unlocked for this purpose. I got it off EBay, and I wasn't looking to blow a ton of money on a high-end phone that I will only use once in awhile, so I bought that phone. I wouldn't want a world phone from Sprint because they might force you to use their SIM in order to profit from exorbitant international roaming charges; and unlocking it would void the warranty. I'd rather have an unlocked GSM phone that I can pop a local SIM into.

I also thought of doing that and every time I get around to do it, I end up running out of time. lol i regretted it especially on my trip to Australia. The wifi sucked there so that was no good. At least in Madrid and Paris I was able to use the EVo's wifi.

There is also that National Geographic World Phone that you can buy/rent for a short time, but I did not like the look of it.

To be honest, world phones are going to have to go away. Every country in the world is just butchering their spectrum to move away 3g to 4g models. GSM in countries are going to have to be cut up to allow 4g services.

In the USA, cdma and gsm will have to be removed ( within the next 5-10 years) to allow more use for 4g services. With the average life expediency of a phone should be 2 years, and the whole spectrum being turned over around the world, it is going to be very hard to launch a supportable 3g world phone.

Finally. I was following this all day, trying to see each and every topic, tweet and video about it.

Excited as heck and then shot down due to it being Motorola. Exited from hearing that it didn't have motoblu then shot down again when it was mentioned it did. Excited that it had no locked bootloader and then shot down again. One cannot go through all these ups and downs at my age. lol

Regardless, I will still be watching it and see if Motorola doesn't mess up by pricing it too high like they did with the Atrix. Being that its the first International Android CDMA, GSM, Wimax phone, I can't be choosy.
Yeaa Sprint.
